Dear Parents,

Welcome to 8th grade Science! I am excited to work with you and your child this year. I know we will have a successful, productive year and I look forward to being a part of the academic progress your child will make.

First, please allow me to briefly introduce myself. My name is Kelly Hoffer and this is my first year as a Green Bear. I graduated with a biology degree from Duquesne University and also went to the University of Rhode Island to study and conduct research in the field of Animal Science. I completed my teaching licensure work through the Rhode Island Teaching Fellows Program. Prior to moving to Toledo, I taught chemistry and biology in Providence, RI. I feel so honored to be a part of the Ottawa Hills staff and I look forward to meeting you at Open House!

In 8th grade science I expect students to BE scientists – we will observe and question the world around us, think critically, perform experiments, and draw conclusions. The science curriculum will integrate earth science, physcial science and life science with an emphasis on inquiry based learning. mathematics, reading, and writing. By the end of the school year, your child will possess an understanding of the scientific world and to be able to conduct scientific investigations on his or her own.

I believe that strong parent-teacher-student communication is an essential part of a successful classroom. With that being said, there are various ways I would appreciate your support at home:

  • Emphasize the importance of homework and hard work. Students must devote time to science outside of the classroom and stay current with all assignments.
  • Check my website regularly. I will use the website to post notes, homework assignments, announcements and links to important resources, such as our online textbook.
  • Check PowerSchool regularly for up-to-date grade information.
  • Review the classroom policies and syllabus with your student and sign and return the bottom portion to me as soon as possible.
  • Complete the 3-2-1 Parent Survey to help me better understand your child as a learner in the classroom. The link to the survey is posted on my website or can be accessed using the QR code at the bottom of this letter.

Please do not hesitate to discuss any concerns you have with me. You can email me at or call me at school (419-534-5376 x3143). I look forward to frequent communication with you as we work together to ensure your child’s success!

Sincerely,

Kelly Hoffer
