8th Grade

Humanities

Welcome to 8th grade Humanities. I’m looking forward to an exciting year. The

history curriculum covers the Colonial Period to the Industrial Period and the Literature reinforces the ideas presented in these time periods. We continue to look at grammar to enhance writing skills. Writing assignments are given throughout the year which align to the genre based on the state standards. Students are also expected to complete outside reading through the Accelerated Reading program list.

Big Idea: Changes/Coming of Age

Driving Question: How does change lead to growth?

Homework:

Students will be doing at about ½-1 hour of homework per evening (M-TH). Assignment Books will be stamped each day and students/parents can refer to the class web page for updates.

Homework will consist of the following:

* Assigned Homework

* AR Book Reading

* Classwork that needs to be finished

* Final Draft Essays

* Research

* Study for Tests or Quizzes

Homework that does not come in will receive a “0” and a call home by the student will be made.

Absences

On Monday a weekly schedule will be posted to the class web site. It is encouraged that students refer to the class web site when out of class for any reason.When you return to school, pick-up the absent packet with your name for each day absent from the front of the class.

Supplies Needed for Class:

index cards (3x5)/Ringpens (Blue or Black; (Red for correcting)

10 Folders (pockets with prongs)

Grades

Academic grades are based on total points earned on homework, classwork, quizzes, tests, essays, AR , oral presentations, projects and group work.

Homework assignments are worth 5 points. Quality of work does count which means thoroughness, accuracy, effort, and completeness.

Promise: You will not fail if all homework is completed and turned in on time.

Red Pen

I will correct work in purple pen. You will correct work in Red Pen. You can receive full points if you add/correct information as we go over the assignment in class. (As long as you made an effort to complete the assignment) Try you best-Take Risks-Make Mistakes and LEARN FROM THEM.

Work Habits Grades:

These grades are based on completed assignments turned in on time of good quality.

Citizenship Grades:

These grades are based on the following:

•Arrives on time to class

•Has all materials and is prepared to work

•Displays a positive attitude

•Respectful of other students and adults

•Cooperates with other students and adults

•Follows the Medea Creek guidelines in the Student Handbook

“Q” (Grade Program)

“Q” is updated each Friday. This will inform you of any missing assignments, test grades, and the present class grades. Check it often.

OFFICE HOURS:

I am available each morning at 7:45 am and 3:00-3:15 every afternoon. In addition, I am generally in my room at nutrition and Tuesdays at lunch for make up tests. AR tests may be taken Thursdays at lunch 12:15-12:30.

Weekly schedules, upcoming school events as well as upcoming projects, test dates and homework can be found on the school’s web site. Check it often.

I am looking forward to working with each student and their family. Remember that I am here to help. Students need to take advantage of the after or before school study groups before tests.
