Welcome to 7th grade! I hope you had a fun-filled summer and you all are ready for a great year. Please take the time to read through the syllabus in order to understand how our ELA class will function this year. I encourage open communication between myself and parents so do not hesitate to call or email me.
This year we will be basing instruction off of the Common Core Standards. We will implement five thematic units in which each explore a wide variety of genres, reading strategies, and writing skills. This approach is designed to promote higher student engagement, project-based learning, and student-centered instruction in the English/Language Arts classroom. Here is a brief look at what we will be focusing on this year:
- Unit 1: Coming of Age
- Unit 2: Survival
- Unit 3: Community
- Unit 4: Good vs. Evil
- Unit 5: Human Rights
Grades/Weighting Scale
Homework – 10%
Classwork – 30%
Tests/Quizzes – 25%
Projects – 35%
Required materials:
ELA binder (1’’ 3-ring binder)
Spiral or composition notebook (left in room)
Pencil/eraser
Paper
Reading book
Class Rules
- Respect the teacher, your classmates, and the learning environment
- Come to class prepared to learn with all the materials needed
- Be optimistic and do your best
- Follow the Husky PRIDE expectations
Failure to follow the classroom rules will result in a verbal warning. If the rule is broken again, then the student will receive an infraction (signature in planner). Multiple signatures will result in a phone call home.
Rewards
Students who follow the rules and exhibit good behavior will receive stamps in their planner. Multiple stamps will allow the student to “buy” rewards, such as a pencil, wearing a hat to class, and bringing a snack. Stamps will be issued by teacher.
Procedures
Students will be expected to follow the classroom procedures every day. If a student does not follow the procedures, a signature will be given, as this distracts from the classroom learning environment.
Entry Procedures
- Enter the room quietly, find assigned seat, get out necessary materials, and write down homework
- Begin warm up (journal quick write)
During class
- Raise hand to speak
- Do not leave desk unless told otherwise by teacher
- During “individual work time” the student is allowed to sharpen pencil, throw away trash, etc.
- Restroom breaks will be determined by a 7th grade team schedule. There will be a break in the morning, during lunch, and in the afternoon. If there is an emergency, please notify the teacher.
Exit Procedures
- At end of class, gather materials and sit quietly until teacher dismisses by row
- Exit classroom in a quiet and orderly fashion
Homework Policy
Homework will be assigned frequently in this class. Most nights, students will be required to read 30 minutes. Please encourage your child to read when they are at home. Homework will be reviewed and turned in during class time. Late assignments will recorded as missing in the grade book until turned in. Late assignments will be taken for half credit after the due date. Projects are also a large part of the grade and will be assigned frequently during the year. Projects will be a way for the student to explore the concepts discussed in class. These projects will range from individual to groups, reading to writing. Students will have time to work on these projects in class.
Absences
If absent, the student must check the absent corner the day he/she returns to school. Missing assignments or classwork will be in the designated folder. It is the student’s responsibility to complete and return the missing work within the time frame of the amount of days he/she was absent.
