Grading Policy

Classwork –35% - Includes individual and group assignments, stations

Test & Projects – 30% - Unit test, individual and group projects, labs

Notebook– 20% - Includes notebook checks and quizzes

Participation- 10% - Students actively participate in instruction and have all materials needed for instruction

Homework – 5% = Total Subject Grade 100%

Interactive Notebooks

The interactive notebooks are the lifeline of 5th grade Science and now Math and will be used as a part of our daily procedure; it will provide organization for notes, thoughts, diagrams, labs and graphs. The notebook is a 20% of your subject grade and is mandatory to succeed in this class. The purpose of the notebooks is to become a critical, creative thinker and writer, to develop nonfiction reading and note taking skills, to organizational skills, to create a portfolio of your student’s learning and to interact with subject concepts while developing a new approach to learning.

It’s is your student’s responsibility to bring their notebooks to class every day. The notebook will serve as a study guide for the concepts we are learning and for review. Students are not using their notebooks and it reflects in their grades. Please encourage your student to refer to their notebooks for help completing tasks and studying for assessments.

Projects

The purpose of projects is to allow students to demonstrate understanding of target concepts and allows students’ to be creativity in the presentation. All projects will be graded based on a custom rubric. Students will receive a copy of the rubric and a copy will be placed on the website. Students that return the rubric with their project will receive 10 extra points. Projects are due on the date designated and at the beginning of class. Students who are absent on the due date, must turn in the project by 7:30am on the day they return. Students who do not turn in a project will receive a 0.

Science Fair Projects are due during the 3rd 9 weeks and are required of all 5th grade students. Packets will come home in November and students will receive instruction on how to complete their Science Fair projects.

Supplies

  • 2 Composition Notebooks (these last the entire school year)
  • 1 bottle of liquid glue
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 box of crayons
  • Pencils
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper

Students are not coming to class with the supplies needed to participate in instruction and complete assignments. Please check with your students to ensure that they have the supplies that they need.

Math Homework

Homework will be based on classroom activities, students will receive homework based on their learning. It is important that they show all their work and complete assignments using their notebooks.
