5th Grade Curriculum

TEACHERS:

The 5th grade team includes:Marc Alvarez,Alicia Bell,Stephanie Dooley, andRebecca Goldberg. Mr. Alvarez teaches reading, Mrs. Bell teaches math,Mrs. Dooley teachesscience, andMrs. Goldbergteaches social studies and written communications.

SKY RANCH:

This is an outdoor educational program with an emphasis on science and leadership skills. All students are encouraged to attend. We will be going on October 12-14. Parent volunteers, as chaperones, are needed. The cost for studentsis $190.00 and the cost for chaperones is $190.00.

BOLIN BLAZERS EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Be in your assigned seat, ready to work when the last person enters the room.
  2. Bring/have paper, pencils, books, and all needed materials, including homework, daily.
  3. Keep hands, feet, books, and objects to yourself.
  4. Show respect. No bad language, rude gestures, cruel teasing, or put-downs.
  5. Follow all directions.
  6. Wait and think – when someone is speaking, do not speak.

CONSEQUENCES:

Warnings will be given. If the warnings are ignored, it may result in walking laps during recess, lonely lunch, and parents being called. For serious disruptions such as fighting, destroying property, refusing to work, or for serious defiance, your child would be sent to the principal. You would be contacted and your child would be counseled. These actions could also be taken for repeatedly failing to meet a learning expectation. Students will carry with them a yellow behavior/late work card with them.

HOMEWORK:

Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise notified. Late work will receive an automatic deduction of 10 points.

TUESDAY FOLDERS:

This folder will contain information from the school office, PTA, and your child’s graded class work. It will come home every Tuesday evening. Please take the time to read through these papers and look at your child’s work. Please have your child return the folder the next day.

CURRICULUM:

SCIENCE:

Earth, Physical, and Life Sciences will be taught through both independent and group projects. Many assignments will require students to work as a team researching information, conducting experiments in the science lab, and presenting data to the class.

READING:

Students will, through a variety of assignments, understand the Elements of Literature. Students will be required to read a book each nine weeks and prepare a report or project. Students should read a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Students are also highly encouraged to participate in the 40-Book Challenge.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Language Arts lessons will focus on grammar, punctuation rules, the parts of speech, the writing process, and using elaboration to extend or enhance writing.

SPELLING:

The spelling list will be introduced on Monday with a test on Friday. The words will be a combination of phonetic spelling patterned words and words related to other content areas.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

American History through the Civil War and American Geography will be the focus of this subject. Students will work on projects independently and in cooperative groups. Projects, songs, presentations, and simulation games will help bring history alive for students.

MATH:

Place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and geometry will be emphasized along with problem solving. Students will often use hands-on math games to practice many of these objectives. Students will also have short homework assignments usually each night of the week.

ENRICHMENT:

Activities focusing on creative and critical problem solving will help students “think on their feet.” Challenging logic puzzles and analogies will be used to develop analytical thinking and deductive reasoning skills.
