Transition to 4th Grade

This year will prove to be a challenging, exciting, and rewarding transition as your child moves from primary to the intermediate level. They will have letter grades on their report cards, an increased work load, more material to keep organized, and many new concepts to master.

Responsibility

The key word for any intermediate student is responsibility. It is each child’s responsibility to come to class prepared and ready to learn. This involves many things such as completing assignments thoughtfully and on time, being sufficiently prepared for class each day, keeping class work and belongings organized, knowing the rules and procedures, and meeting class expectations. If students display responsibility, they will be successful this year and will be far more prepared for the challenges in Middle School.

Discipline

Our Class Creed and Summit View Elementary’s “Always Rules” outline our behavior expectations and are posted in each classroom. All students are expected to make good choices and follow all school rules. If students neglect to abide the rules they must “flip a card” on the behavior chart that follows:

Green: Great Day! Students start on green everyday

Yellow: Warning

Blue: Lose Recess Time (Walk the Fence or Extra Assignment)

Red: Call parents and meet with principal

* Physical violence, bullying, verbal abuse, or any other defiant behavior will automatically result in a meeting with the principal.

Grading Scale

93 – 100% AUnderstanding and exceeding expectations

85 – 92%BUnderstanding and meeting expectations

76 – 84%CNot fully understanding and right at average

70 – 75%DStruggling and lacking understanding

0 – 70%U/FDo not understand and may have incomplete work

Planners

Each day students will be required to record homework and daily assignments in their planner. Planners will be monitored each morning to see that the assignments have been copied and parent’s signatures are present from the previous day.

*Beginning in September, if planner is not signed by a parent, the student will flip his/her card.

The planner is a form of communication. All late work notices, class assignments, and behavior notices will be documented in this book. Likewise, we encourage parents to record notes, reminders, etc. in the planner. For this reason, we ask that you keep the notebook intact and in good condition. Students who lose their planners will be required to purchase another one.

Important Policies to beCome familiar with

Graded Work and Important Announcements

Each Thursday students will bring home graded assignments, school newsletters, important announcements, and CLUB notice. It must be signed and returned the following day! Upon receiving the 4th notice in any month, the student will serve an afterschool detention with the principal. Please make an effort to read our class newsletters every other week located in Thursday folders for important announcements.

Projects

Students will be assigned both in-school and at-home projects to complete throughout the year. All students are expected to complete their work themselves and turned in on the assigned due date. Parents and family members may assist students on projects but may not do it for them. All projects will be explained in class and recorded in planners. Students need to use their time wisely, make sure they don’t procrastinate on both homework and projects!

Trips/Parties

Our class will be going on field trips and will have seasonal parties throughout the year. Students and families will be informed when the occasion arises.

Snack and Drink

Students will be allowed to bring in a small healthy snack to eat at a designated time during the day. Students may also bring in bottled water to drink during the day if desired. If snacks and water bottles become a distraction the privilege will be taken away.

Chill Bills

Chill Bills is a system we implement in the classroom where students can earn and lose money (fake money) based on classroom performance, behavior, work quality, manners, effort, and attitude. Chill Bills teach students responsibility and some economic content in the classroom. Chill Bills can be cashed in for homework passes, privileges, and prizes.

Reward Parties

We will have a number of reward parties throughout the year. The parties are a privilege the students must earn. Students who follow the rules, work hard, complete their assignments, and display effort in the classroom will be able to attend the parties. The students who do not earn the parties will spend the party time in a study hall completing content related work. Information will be sent home prior to the first reward party.

Birthdays

If you choose to send a treat to school for your child’s birthday, it must be store bought, individually wrapped, and peanut free. Please write in the planner or email me when you plan on sending in a treat.
