DIV. 10 NEWS

Welcome From Mrs. Gregory

Now that classes are set and we are all getting back into our school routine I thought I’d send a note home to explain how this year is going to work and hopefully answer any questions you may have.

COMBINATION GRADE

As you may or may not be aware our class is a mixture of both Grade 4 and 5 students. I have extensive experience teaching “split” classes and while it can be tricky it can be quite a rewarding experience. Throughout the year students will work in grade and ability level groups as well as a whole class. My goal is to cover all content and curriculum that is required but I may have to get a little creative in being able to squeeze it all in. Students will be evaluated and assessed according to expectations of their grade level not their classmates as a whole. In a school our size it is hard not to be in a “split” at some point. Please contact me if you have concerns or questions.

Homework

It is expected that each student:

·  Read at least 20 minutes a night.

·  Practice their spelling sort for the weekly spelling test. Words and lists will be sent home every week.

·  Have their planner reviewed and signed by their parent each night.

·  Will spend time at home finishing assignments that have not been completed in class.

·  A maximum of 1 hour of homework per night can be expected including the reading.

·  There will be one independent oral report project assigned per term (Open Mic). Details and criteria will be sent home soon.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

·  Your child has been provided with a planner to use as a communication tool between home and school. The cost for the planner is $7.00.

·  Your child also requires a pair of shoes that will be used inside on days when their other shoes are wet or dirty as well as during gym class. Shoes need not be new but clean and with non marking soles. Flip flops, crocs, slippers or sandals are not usable in the gym.

·  Please ensure your child has a set of gym strip at school. Suitable clothing would include a t-shirt, pair of shorts or sweat pants and pair of socks. Jeans or cut offs are not acceptable. Placing these items in a plastic or cloth drawstring bag that can be hung from a hook would be very helpful. Some deodorant may also be a good addition to this gym bag, your call.

·  I will be encouraging my students to drink water regularly and they will be permitted to have a plastic water bottle at their desk that they can refill at our school filling stations. Please no stainless bottles. Labeling the bottle with your child’s name would be very helpful.

Communication

·  We will be using the planner to keep track of homework and other important things going on at school. I will be reviewing these every morning so this is a great place to jot a note.

·  The school website is another good spot to keep track of what we are doing in class. I do a daily homework board there and I will be posting our monthly newsletter there. http://yarrow.sd33.bc.ca

·  Please feel free to contact me at

·  I’d also like your email address if you could jot it down in your child’s planner or email me at the address above. Please be sure it is one you regularly check.

STUDENT TEACHER

Our class has been lucky to be selected to have a student teacher from UFV this year. Ms. Munro has been visiting us this week to get to know the class and will be back for about a month mid- October and then again for her long practicum in February.
