Baade Blurb

Welcome back! Hopefully, everyone had a chance to spend time with family and friends over the Christmas Break. It's funny how that seems so long ago already! It doesn't take much time to get back into the "groove" of the exciting things that happen at the School.

Driver Training started for 10 students at Imperial School. Mr. George Wolff is doing the classroom instruction, and Mr. Dean Stewart will be doing the on-road training.

Final exams continue this week; and the staff would like to acknowledge the hard work and effort students are exhibiting during their final exams. Great job, students! Grade 10-12 students will start a new semester on Thursday, February 1. Report cards will be distributed to grade 7-12 students on Friday, February 9. Elementary report cards will come out in March.

For the exception of the students in Driver Training, all students will have the pleasure of having a day off on January 31. Staff will have a Professional Development Day with Mary Newton. She will be speaking on ODD, ADHD, ADD, and a variety of other behavioral diagnoses.

Also, please note that the SRC Bonspiel for grade 7-12 students is on Thursday, February 1. The day will kick off with a Pancake/Sausage Breakfast at 8:15 — 9:00 am at the School. Curling will run from 9:15 pm — 3:00 pm at the Imperial Community Rink, and food will be available. This is open to everyone in the community. Come join us for a day of fun and curling expertise! A special thank you to Mr. Keith Busche for preparing and maintaining the ice for the students!

It is with great pleasure that I can share that the Affinity Credit Union in Simpson donated an additional $2500 to the SCC for supporting school ventures. These donations will help to finish the stage valance, to work on the track, and to complete smaller school upgrades. Thank you, Affinity, for your continued support! Also, a hearty thank you to the Imperial Service Club for a generous donation of $500 to top up our drama budget for exposure to live theatre. As a result, all K-12 students will have a chance to see a professional performance this year!

Family Literacy Day occurred on Saturday, January 27. The School celebrated it on Monday with families coming to read and work on inferencing skills with 1<-8 students. The students and guests were treated to a breakfast of cereal, yogurt, muffins and juice or coffee. Thank you to the families who participated in this literacy event.

This past Saturday, I attended the Imperial Minor Hockey Day, and I could not help to reflect on the positivity of a day like this for our community. Students, parents, grandparents, and friends were supporting the Rink's many activities all day long. Thank you to our hockey players, curlers, organizers and volunteers. It is a gift for our students to see a community working together and demonstrating the epitome of good citizenship. Hats off to Imperial and surrounding community members! Mrs. Carol Baade

School Ski Trip

We will be taking Grades 7-12 to Table Mountain Regional Park for our ski trip this year. Our adventure will be on Monday, March 26. Students can ski, snowboard and/or tube. Forms will be sent home at the beginning of February. We are also looking for a couple of adults to travel in their own vehicle (truck or van is suggested) to help transport personal skiing equipment that we are not allowed to bring on the bus. If you are interested in coming on the ski trip, please contact Mr. Heppner for details. Mr. Joel Heppner

Raising Readers

Each month Imperial School's Literacy Team will feature a "key" from the resource 7 Keys to Comprehension. We feel, when talking about reading with your child, it is important to use the same terminology as we do at a school; this is a great way to support your child's learning!

Featured "Ke•/': Making Inferences

What does it mean?

An inference is using your knowledge and clues from the text to "put the pieces together." An inference is an idea that vou have based on what the text says (evidence) plus your own background knowledge and experiences.

As a reader you take what the text explicitly (obviously) states and use your background knowledge to draw a conclusion to create deeper meaning of the text.

What can you do at home?

When reading together, you might encourage your child to engage in inferring by asking your child, "l wonder what the author meant?" Encourage your child to use their prior knowledge to create meaning from the text, by sharing personal opinions and forming interpretations. You can model inferencing out loud for your child, and then encourage them to do the same. As your child begins to inference out loud, praise them for doing so. You could say, "Awesome jobyou just made an inference!" (readingresource.net/twocandoit.blogspot.com)

Your child might think:

1.What does the text say?

2.What do I already know about this topic?

3.What does this make me think?

When a child infers he/she might say:

  • The text says. This makes me think I can infer that
  • The text saysThis means....
  • Maybe it meansbecause... My schema is.... so I infer that...

Enjoy the precious conversations you have with your child while reading, and thank you for your support at home!

Jr. Curling

Curling season is well underway at Imperial School! The junior curlers this year include: Kayden Freeman,

Tyson Webster, Cohen Sim, Rylan Freeman, J.J. Webster, Harrison Mooney, Jamison Langlois, Jody Williams, Preston Van Damme, Melissa Federspiel, and Paige Crittenden. This enthusiastic bunch has been practising at the Imperial Curling Rink on Wednesdays and Fridays during the months of December and January. Thank you, Mr. Keith Busche, for always having the ice in tip-top shape for every event. Also, special thanks to the Rink Board for giving us access to the facility for this extra-curricular program.

On Monday, January 15, both teams travelled to Watrous to curl against the Watrous Junior Mixed and Boys teams. It's always fun to get to play other students from nearby towns. We welcomed Davidson's Junior Girls and Watrous' Junior Boys Teams at our own rink just this past Friday, and we are looking forward to hosting the Watrous Mixed Team on Friday, February 2. We will be attending Pre-Districts in Cudworth on Tuesday, February 6. Look for our results in the next newsletter!

In-motion

In-motion has been going strong for the months of December and January. Each morning before school, the 1<-6 students come in out of the elements to enjoy some fun and games in the gym. With the leadership of the high school student mentors, students tally the number of laps they run or walk before we begin our game for the day. Each time a student accumulates 40 laps (20 for Kindergarteners), a plastic, colourful foot is earned to go on a bracelet or keychain. The students look forward to this reward each week! After the students run/walk their laps, the student mentor leads them in a game and stretches. In-motion will continue until the February break.
