TRUSTEES

GLOUCESTER CULTURE TRUST

We are on a mission to put art and culture at the heart of Gloucester for the good of all.

We have lots of ideas (as you can see on the front cover of this pack) and a strategy that says how we are going to make this happen. You can read the Cultural Vision and Strategy 2016-2026 on our website here

Gloucester is a city full of heritage and music - it is a city with a large number of young people and young families whose creativity, curiosity and ambition should be nurtured, and it is a city that wants to show compassion for the vulnerable and provide opportunities for all to flourish.

We agree with Phil Gibby – Arts Council England’s Area Director – who stressed the transformative role culture can play in our lives: it creates jobs and economic growth; it builds stronger communities; it offers hope and aspiration to children and young people; it puts places on the map.

We need to recruit Trustees to join our board to galvanise and engage a wide range of stakeholders and partners to drive the mission forward.

If you are looking to make a real difference to the future of Gloucester and relish the challenge of working across the city together with everyone who has a stake in realising our artistic, creative and cultural potential, then do consider applying to become a Trustee.

You need to be passionate about Gloucester and about the impact arts and culture can have in the lives of individuals, communities and the City’s economy. You need to have a track record of making things happen whether that’s in your family, your street, your community, your business or across a sector - just as importantly you need to know how to inspire others to get involved and have a voice.

APPOINTMENT BRIEF - TRUSTEES GLOUCESTER CULTURE TRUST

In March 2016 Gloucester City Council adopted a Cultural Vision & Strategy for 2016-26.

To deliver this strategy the council proposed setting up the Gloucester Culture Trust. A Chair and board of trustees were recruited and a director for the organisation, Hollie Smith-Charles, was appointed. The overall mission of the new strategy is to put art and culture at the heart of Gloucester for the good of all.

The Trust is a strategic organisation rather than a producer or presenter of events. Its role is to facilitate and fundraise for projects and then create partnerships or commission others to deliver.

The Trust needs to be fleet of foot and quick to respond, able to maintain the momentum of recent activity and have the vision and confidence to prioritise the initiatives that will have the most impact.

The platform for change stretches across private and public sectors and needs to engage and involve people from different professional and community backgrounds across Gloucester city centre and the surrounding communities. The Board of Trustees will be able to build or already have strong links and networks across these different and diverse communities of interest.

The Board will comprise a maximum of 12 people. Currently we have nine board members, including one Gloucester City Council nominee – currently Lise Noakes, the Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure who is also Chair. Other members of the Board, collectively as a group, possess a range of skills and experience in cultural, not-for-profit and commercial organisations. You can read more about the current board here:

We want a Board that is truly representative of the diverse communities within the City and will seek to appoint people who, together, can provide that diversity and an ideal mix of personal skills, experience, commitment and enthusiasm. We are also keen to hear from people aged 18-25 to ensure their views are heard and represented in our plans going forward.

We are determined to help support our Trustees to be effective in these roles and support, mentoring and training will be offered and provided.

The Board will act as the trustees of a proposed new charitable organisation that will oversee delivery of the cultural strategy. This organisation is in the process of being set up by the current board and Director Hollie Smith-Charles.

A key role of the Board is to generate support and fundraising, from both the public and private sectors, to aid the development of this Strategy, with delivery commissioned from existing and new cultural organisations in Gloucester.

We have already been successful in securing a
£1.49 million Great Place award for Gloucester, as a partner alongside Gloucester City Council, University of Gloucestershire, the NHS, Create Gloucestershire, Gloucester Cathedral and many others, for a three-year investment in the city’s heritage and arts activity and infrastructure. You can read more about this here:

Being on the board is a voluntary role, but all the Trustees on the Board are expected to embrace the seven principles of public life as outlined by Nolan Committee:

Integrity Openness

SelflessnessHonesty

ObjectivityLeadership

Accountability
