Chapters 4-7

1. Jack shows himself as a brave boy throughout the book. It’s hard to imagine such a young boy going on such a dangerous journey, but Jack doesn’t back down from many challenges. Jack left his family in Boston, which would be a hard decision. He also showed his brave spirit by going along with Praiseworthy’s plans. Even though Jack was scared to go up to the Captain’s room in the beginning, he acted brave and went along with Praiseworthy and stuck up for himself. He was also brave by keeping the ship’s pig Good Luck safe. Most boys would be too scared to get in trouble and wouldn’t have risked being a part of keeping Good Luck away from the cook.

2. Jack loved the challenge of a race but I think if he had to choose he’s rather find gold. He wanted so badly to take money back to Boston to safe his Aunt Arabella’s house. I think Jack is always putting others first and he’d be crushed if he didn’t go back to Boston rich.

3. When the passengers of the ship got to California I bet it was every man for himself. Even though the men were friends on the ships, I think they only had eyes for gold when they got to California. We’ve learned that there was a lot of fighting over claims and gold so I don’t think many people were friends when it came to getting rich.

4. The streets would be buzzing with thousands of men with shovels and pans in their hands. They would be dressed in work clothes and hats ready to go to the gold fields. I bet it was loud with workers building many new restaurants, hotels, and stores. Store workers would be outside their store yelling at the miners to buy their supplies from them. There would be a lot of new boats coming into the bay bringing more 49ers. It would be crazy!
