Student Accessibility Services
accommodations are offered through the Central Virginia Community College Counseling Center. It is our desire to help students make the transition into college life and connect them with those services and resources needed to be successful in college.
In accordance with Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, CVCC provides reasonable accommodations to students with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities including learning.
It is important for students to understand that at CVCC students who wish to receive accommodations must self-identify to one of our counselors in order to begin the accommodation process. Please note that current and appropriate documentation of a disability is required in order to obtain requested services.
As students move into the adult world, self-advocacy and self-reliance become very important skills. The ability to cope with the challenges of daily living as well as the ability to clearly communicate one’s needs contribute to a successful college outcome.
If you are an individual with a disability and require or desire any assistive devices, services, or other accommodations, please contact the Counseling Center at 434.832.7800 and schedule an appointment with one of our counselors. Please indicate that your appointment concerns accommodations so enough time will be allowed to cover all issues.
Central Virginia Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or disability in its programs or activities. Inquiries related to the college’s nondiscrimination policies should be directed to the ADA Coordinator, Counseling Department, 3506 Wards, Rd, Lynchburg, Va. 24502, 434.832.7802, 800.562.3060, TDD 434.832.7701.

SUCCESS TIPS
Contact Your Instructor
If you have questions regarding your class, talk to your instructor. Faculty members usually include their office hours and/or phone number in the class syllabus. If you cannot locate this information, contact your instructor byphone or emailprior to or immediately following your class session, or contact the Dean. You can look up this information online by searching the CVCC employee directory. You may also call 1-800-562-3060 to reach faculty or staff if you are out of the local calling area.
Class Attendance
Attendance usually has a high correlation with your course grade. Absences should be discussed with your instructor in advance. It is your responsibility to find out what assignments were missed and ask the instructor how to make them up, if make-up is possible. Many instructors consider attendance so essential that your grade will be affected by your absence. Check your course syllabus or ask your instructor for this information. The College policy on attendance is in the Catalog under Academic Information it states: “ Per VCCS Policy,Students who do not attend a minimum of one class meeting (or log into a web-based course) prior to the dropdate must be administratively dropped from the course. No refund will be granted for students who enroll but failto attend or drop themselves from the course.
Students missing 20% or more of a class will be administratively withdrawn from the course. The student who is withdrawn by the official last day for students to withdraw from a class without grade penalty will receive a grade of “W”. After this time, the student who is withdrawn shall receive a grade of “F”, except under mitigating circumstances. The mitigating circumstances process is outlined on page 41 of the college catalog.
