The Family and Carer Service provides support to the families, friends, & carers of people who misuse alcohol. We provide information, advice, psycho-educative support and advocacy to anyone who is concerned and/or is affected by somebody-else’s alcohol use. They do not have to be a registered carer, and the person who misuses alcohol does not have to be in treatment with us. We ensure that affected families and friends have access to a confidential platform to reflect on their own needs and well-being.

Purpose of this role: The Volunteer Family Worker will carry a small caseload, and support in the day to day running of the Family & Carer Service. They will provide assessment, information & advice, groups, and 1-2-1 support for the families, friends, & carers of alcohol misusers. The volunteer will enable families, friends, carers to identify and explore concerns, help them develop solutions, and empower them to take action to manage their own challenges.

Role Description:

  1. To provide advice and information, around drugs and alcohol, and harm reduction
  2. To complete initial assessments.
  3. To assist with day to day office duties such as telephone support, supporting the Family Service with administrative duties and comprehensive recorded keeping.
  4. To assist and co-facilitate carers support group sessions and workshops.
  5. To carry a small caseload of clients (with training and support)
  6. Attend regular trainings provided by CGL to achieve quality standards.

Person Specification:

1. Qualifications: Good basic education – numeracy and literacy and IT skills.

2. Knowledge:

  • Awareness of information sources, how and where to access them.
  • Awareness of issues facing people with drug and/or alcohol problems.

3. Experience:

  • Evidence of providing support to individuals on a one-to-one basis. This may be in a work, educational or personal setting.
  • Some basic office experience would be an advantage

4. Skills & Abilities - Effective:

  • Communication skills
  • Listening skills
  • Analytical skills

5. Additional:

  • Able to respect and maintain confidentiality and boundaries
  • Willingness to attend regular supervision
  • Willingness to undergoing regular training

Time Commitment:

Our carers need stability and consistency in their development journey, and our volunteers and peer mentors are a crucial part of this journey. As such, we require at least one full weekdays from 9am to 5pm for a minimum of 6 months commitment for this role. This role may suit students in need of clinical placements.
