Weeks 9 and 10 for English 101

Monday, November 23, Tuesday, November 24, and Wednesday, November 25: We will meet in the Library Lab, Room T, to learn how to access material for your argumentative/persuasive essay. Be sure to have a possible topic with you. HOMEWORK: Continue to work on your argumentative/persuasive essay. Complete the online exercises noted in A Writer’s Reference on pages 411, Research exercises>E-ex MLA 3-1 through MLA 3-4, and Research exercises > E-ex MLA 4-3 on page 421, by the end of this week. Develop the points you will use in support of your thesis and the counterargument you plan to refute. Prepare your oral presentation. You can choose the date for your individual presentation to the class.

Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27: Thanksgiving Holiday.

Monday, November 30: We will be back in our regular classroom. Individuals may receive credit by presenting their debatable issue, the arguments they will be using, and the outside sources they plan to mention in their essay in about 10 minutes. HOMEWORK: Read and respond in two paragraphs—four sentences per paragraph-- to the Williams essay starting on page 539 and 2 paragraphs to the Wurster essay starting on page 543 in Bedford.

Tuesday, December 1: Individuals can receive credit by presenting their debatable issue, the arguments they will be using, and the outside sources they plan to mention in their essay in about 10 minutes. We can discuss the assigned essays as well. HOMEWORK: Continue to work on your argumentative essay. Read and respond to the Pollitt essay, starting on page 548, and the Colson essay, starting on page 554, in Bedford. Write at least two paragraphs, four sentences per paragraph, for each response.

Wednesday, December 2: Individuals can receive credit by presenting their debatable issue, the arguments they will be using, and the outside sources they plan to mention in their essay in about 10 minutes. We can also discuss the Pollitt and Colson essays. HOMEWORK: Read and respond to the Khan essay, starting on page 558, and the Chavez essay, starting on page 563, in Bedford. Write at least two paragraphs, four sentences per paragraph, for each response.

Thursday, December 3: Individuals can receive credit by presenting their debatable issue, the arguments they will be using, and the outside sources they plan to mention in their essay in about 10 minutes. We can also discuss the Khan and Chavez essays. HOMEWORK: Read and respond to the Krikorian essay, starting on page 567, and the Danticat essay, starting on page 572, in Bedford. Write at least two paragraphs, four sentences per paragraph, for each response.

Friday, December 4: Individuals can receive credit by presenting their debatable issue, the arguments they will be using, and the outside sources they plan to mention in their essay in about 10 minutes. We can also discuss the Krikorian and Danticat essays.

HOMEWORK: On Monday submit your tentative thesis for the argumentative essay and the arguments you will use to support your position. We will share drafts on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, and the essay is due on Thursday, December 10.
