Weekly News From Fourth Grade

November 6, 2015

Dear Parents,

Please excuse the lapse in weekly news from last week. With the day off Tuesday, early dismissal Friday, and report cards all pending,I’m afraid I got behind!

Let me start by congratulating our amazing homeroom parents, Mrs. Bergin and Mrs. Ditrifor organizing a spooktacular fall celebration. From the colorful costumes, to the yummy treats sent in by our families, to the exciting games including Bingo and Seven-Up, we all had a fabulous time! Please enjoy some of the photos.

Despite being a shorter academic week, a lot was accomplished. We have been presenting our October creative book reports. There were many terrific presentations from dioramas and games to posters advertising the books we read, we’ve got some great ideas for what books to read next thanks to our friends!

The end of the marking period this week brings an end to social studies for the next two marking periods and the beginning of science. Our Foss curriculum is very much a hands-on, discovery based methodology for learning about science. In the second marking period our focus will be on magnetism and electricity. Ask your child to tell you what he/she is learning in our experiments.

In math we begin to learn about decimals in unit 4. Have you played any of the Everydaymathonline.com games with your child? Decimal-Fraction Concentration is a great one for building a better understanding of equivalencies between decimals and fractions. Please encourage your child to work on their basic facts skills. Knowledge of basic facts is critical to your child’s success in multi-digit multiplication and long division.Practice, practice, practice!

The items that come in the green folder this Wednesday will contain the final assessments of the first marking period. I would like to give you the opportunity to see this work from your child before their report card comes home in a couple of weeks. There will be a confirmation for your conference time along with your child’s report card.

As always, thank you for being partners in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Badulak

p.s. I hope by now you have heard about the Disguised Turkey Project. If not, ask your child. You can also find it on my website.
