The IRB is up for reaccreditation this year with site visitors coming to campus March 30, 31 and April 1st.

As a way of preparing our campus for the site visit a series of pop quizzes have been offered on a weekly basis for 6 weeks, with an incentive of a candy bar or an apple for those who get the pop quiz question/s correct.

I encourage you to participate and to inform your students about the weekly pop quiz.

International Travel Grant Requests

ITEM:
​Notice seeking applications to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies, while leveraging the Federal investment in environmental enhancement and protection in conjunction with agricultural production. CIG projects are expected to lead to the transfer of conservation technologies, management systems, and innovative approaches (such as market-based systems) into NRCS technical manuals and guides or to the private sector.

ACTION:
Applications are due May 10, 2016. Approximately up to $20 million is available to support multiple awards.

DoD Announces Next University Research Instrumentation Competition

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) recently announced details on the next round of its Defense University Research Instrumentation Awardsand shared a list ofawardees from its previous competition. The awards support the acquisition of research equipment or instrumentation in order to conduct research and educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense. For those interested in applying in thenext round, the application deadline isAugust 26, 2016. Approximately $47 million will beavailable for awards ranging from $50,000 to $1.5 million. To get a sense of the types of equipment purchases that have been funded by DoD, take a look at thislistof thelatest awardees, which includes researchers from GRC member institutions California State University Fullerton and San Jose State University.

NSF Unveils INCLUDES Initiative

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently released competition information for its new INCLUDES Initiative.INCLUDES, an acronym for Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science, is designed to enhance U.S. leadership in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) discoveries and innovations by supportingdiverse participationin these fields. The long-term goal of INCLUDES is to support, over the next 10 years, innovative models, networks, partnerships, and research that enable the U.S. STEM workforce to thrive by ensuring that women, African Americans, Hispanics, and people with disabilities are represented in percentages comparable to their representation in the U.S. population.

This first competition is for Design and Development Launch Pilots. The deadline for preliminary proposals isApril 15, 2016. Invited full proposals are due June 24, 2016. Approximately $12.5 million is available for up to 40 awards in FY 16. Successful proposals should include diverse teams of stakeholders (justifying the role of each partner) including academic institutions, professional organizations, business, industry, government, non-profit, community-based, science and industry-focused organizations.

Supports day-long events devoted to the digitzation of a wide range of community cultural heritage materials. Events must be accompanied by public programming that explores these materials as a window on a community’s history and culture. The public programming may occur before, on, and/or after the digitization event. Grants of up to $12,000 are available. Air and Radiation

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Description:

Supports projects and programs relating to air quality, transportation, climate change, indoor air and other related topics, including acid rain, air quality index, climate change, haze & visibility; indoor air quality; ozone depletion, radiation, smog, particles & other common pollutants, toxic air pollutants, and vehicles and engines. Current opportunities include: Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program, which supports projects that achieve significant reductions in diesel emissions, particularly from fleets operating at or servicing goods movement facilities located in areas designated as having poor air quality. Environmental Education Local Grants Programs

Supports projects that conduct locally-focused environmental education projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices. Approximately 30 awards of up to $91,000 each, three from each of the ten EPA regional offices, are available to support projects lasting up to two years. Cost sharing is required. Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Research Grants

Supports research grants in numerous environmental science and engineering disciplines through a competitive solicitation process. Current solicitations include "National Priorities: Impacts of Water Conservation on Water Quality in Premise Plumbing and Water Distribution Systems" (3/17/16) to investigate the effect of water flow on water quality, and "Integrating Human Health and Well-Being with Ecosystem Services" (4/21/16) for collaborative, community-based research that will foster better understanding of how ecosystems support human health and well-being.
