Whew! Just like many of you, the Watauga Arts Council staff has been Spring cleaning. A long, dusty day was spent in the Jones House Community Center attic sweeping out dark corners and dusting off long forgotten boxes. But the work was worth it. In addition to dragging out bags and piles of trash, we came upon some real treasures.

And everyone who comes to our ARTfanATTIC Sale on Saturday, April 14th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. will benefit from our efforts. With about fifty “found” pieces of art, we will also add a number of original art donated by some well-known local artists: Judy Humphrey, Shelly Hehenberger, and Joseph Barthet are three who have so far contributed some of their beautiful art. We are hoping others will bring their work by to add to the sale. Although you will find high quality art at this sale, don’t expect to find high prices. This is your chance to buy original art at drastically reduced prices. After all, it is an attic sale!

But the job of preparing for the sale has certainly not been all work and it has not all been done by the Watauga Arts Council staff. Four very capable and industrious Appalachian students in Dr. Norm Clark’s communication’s class have been planning and preparing for the sale which due to their input promises to be a really fun event. Asha Little, Emily Kennedy, Amanda Redding, and Kristin Owens have brought their youth and enthusiasm to what would have just been an art attic sale if left to the Arts Council staff.

The first time we sat down with these young women to plan the sale, it was evident they had some very definite ideas of what the event should be.

We have got to have free food so the college students will come, they agreed. Well okay. But can you find someone to donate free food? They could. For a start, Papa Johns is donating pizzas and Wing Zone is donating wings.

We need something fun for kids, they said, and a quick trip over to Art Mart and John Bond owner of Art Mart donates face paint and the girls line up their artistic friends to be the painters.

Live music would be great, they said and Mark Freed, the Arts Council folklorist and in-house musician, lines up Deborah Jean and Randy Sheets as well as Brian Yerman to play. The girls make a call and have Higher Ground on the schedule. Recorded music will ensure that silence does not fill the air at any point in the day.

In addition a number of items will be raffled off during the day. Meals at Golden Corral, a T-Shirt from Mountaineer Mania, regional books (and a cute stuffed bear) from High Country Publishers, and some unique jewelry are just a few of the items that are in the mix so far.

Also, the first 200 people to come to the event will receive a free Watauga Arts Council T-Shirt. What more could you ask for?

Anyway it should be a really fun day and we hope the community will come out and enjoy the day, buy some art, and support the Watauga Arts Council.
