Week One: Night

Monday:

  1. Journal Entry/Do Now: Describe a time when someone told you a story so outrageous that you had a hard time believing it was true. Did you end up believing it? What made you believe it or not? What makes a story believable?
  1. Access Previous Knowledge: (10 minutes): What do you already know about the Holocaust that occurred during WWII? Write in journals any and everything you know about the above question. Share with partner. Quick talk-back.
  1. Generate Questions have: put on paper posted around room; review and re-align
  1. HW: Journal Entry: Describe a time when you witnessed a parent/guardian feeling scared. What were they scared of? How did it make you feel? How did you react?

Wednesday:

  1. Discuss HW responses/Hand Out books
  2. Read ‘Section One’ together (1-20). Write questions and reactions in journal/notebook

3.  Homework Due Next Class: In your journal/notebook:

1.  Select THREE passages (quotes) from the reading

2.  Respond to these passages in-depth (1-2 paragraphs each)

3.  Be sure to select passages that really ‘jump off the page’ for you and allow you to think deeply. Here are some questions to consider when responding to each of the three passages/section:

§  If you were in his situation, what would you have done?

§  What would have been going through your heart and your mind?

§  What questions would you have? What answers?

§  What does this event/choice/occurrence make you think about? How does it make you feel?

§  What connections can you make to your life and/or our life today about this event?

§  What about this passage stands out to you?

Friday:

1.  Do Now: Post Quotations around room on Butcher Paper. Highlight important points.

2.  Finish Reading through page 20

3.  Review/Discuss ‘Section One’ using the quotes posted around the room.

4.  Small Group Question Responses:

o  What is Elie’s family like? To whom in his family does he seem most attached? With whom would he like to be closer?

o  What role does Moshe the Beadle play in Eliezer’s life?

o  How important is religion to the way Eliezer defines his identity?

o  Why do you think they refuse to believe Moshe when he returns to Sighet?

o  Do you think people really believe that Moshe is lying to them?

o  What is the difference between saying that someone is lying and saying that you cannot believe what he or she is saying?

o  Why do you think Elie Wiesel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle?

5.  Small Group Activity: Create a timeline of important events so far in the story. Share.

6.  Homework Due Next Class: Read pgs. 21-26. Select one more quote and write a response to it. Write a diary entry (on separate sheet of paper) about ?????
