Week Eight: The Flood

Genesis 6,7,8

  1. We must look at this account in Scriptural context, and not through the lens of familiar childhood Bible stories that are incomplete.

*An account of a devastating flood is recorded by hundreds of cultures. All of these are echoes of the true story recorded by Moses in Genesis.

*The context is the introduction of sin into the world and into the nature of all mankind. Genesis 3-6

*This widespread wickedness, like a malignancy, had contaminated the earth. This brought sorrow to the heart of God; He rued the day He had made man. Genesis 6:5-6

*God decided to “de-create” the earth and to step back from His creation. Genesis 6:7

  1. But God favored Noah because he was a man who believed God and obeyed Him. Genesis 6:8-10

*What do we learn about Noah?

He was a righteous man in a time of pervasive wickedness and was a herald of the truth.

He was blameless in his generation. He lived rightly before others.

He walked with God, like his family before him.

*His three sons are also listed and will play a large part in Israel’s history.

*Again, God stated that because man has “corrupted” or “brought ruin and decay” to the earth, He was resolved to destroy all the earth. Genesis 6:11-13

  1. God gave instructions to Noah to build an ark. Genesis 6:14-22

*Note the pattern of language: “So God said…..and Noah did all God had told him to do.”

*Notice the specific details God gave about what would soon happen and how to construct the boat.

*How would you describe the command given by God? It would appear to be:

Unbelievable: He had never even seen rain and he is living in a land-locked area.

Laborious: This was a huge boat, measuring at least 1 ½ football fields in length and at least 3 levels high and 75 feet wide!

Lengthy: It will take him about 100 years to complete this task.

Expensive: requiring great financial sacrifice.

*God also promised to keep covenant with Noah, the first time the word is used in the Bible.

*In light of all of this what does it say about Noah’s response? He did everythingaccording to the exact specifications of God. Genesis 6:13,22; 7: 1,5; 8:15,18

  1. There are 6 different intervals of time in the chronology of the flood, just as there were 6 days of creation. Genesis 7: 1-24; 8:1-12

7:4-107 days Noah and all entered the ark, waited for rain.

7:11-1740 days & nightsRaining and flooding from the deep began.

7:18-24; 8:3150 days A great flood prevailed over all the earth; receded at end.

8:4-8End of 40 days The waters began to recede; ark rested on the mountain.

Noah opened window, sent out raven and dove.

8:9-11End of 7 daysHe sent out dove; returned with olive leaf.

8:12End of 7 daysThe dove did not return; the water had dried up.

  1. On the 7th interval of time, God called Noah to come out of the ark. Genesis 8:13-19
  1. The Flood points to greater spiritual realities:

*They had perfect security in the boat. Once shut in by God, no one could open the door again. In Christ, no one can snatch us away from Him. Revelation 3:7b

*They were sealed into the boat when God closed the door. As believers in Jesus, we are sealed by the Holy Spirit of God forever. Ephesians 4:30

*As Noah and his family were saved through the waters (the judgment of God), so are we saved from the final judgment of God by our spiritual baptism as we are immersed in union with Him. 1 Peter 3:20-21

*Just as the flood came as God said it would, so will the final judgment of God! But, even as He saved Noah and his family, God will save His godly ones from it! 2 Peter 2:5,9

*As God called Noah to come out of the ark—from death to life---so does He call us today to come forth to eternal life. John 5:25; Revelation 3:20

*All of this---the warning of the flood, the separation of Noah for deliverance, the instructions for the ark, the preservation through the flood, the calling out of the ark to new life—are acts of God’s grace and favor. By faith, Noah obeyed God. Hebrews 11:7

*People ignored the warnings of Noah as he preached and as he built the great ark. The flood came upon them suddenly and it was too late. The same will be true of the Second Coming of Christ and the coming of final judgment. Matthew 24:38-39

*Finally, Noah is found in the genealogy of Christ. So, through him and his offspring, the promise for the Deliverer to come would be fulfilled. Luke 3:36
