Week beginning 20th September, 2015

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

‘Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me’.

In the Gospel today we see the disciples arguing among themselves as to which of them was the greatest, still not understanding Christs message. Jesus said to them ' If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all.” He them took a little child, set him in front of them put his arms around him and said to them "anyone who welcomes one of these
little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the One who sent me". Jesus was telling us that God is gentle and this is what He wants us to be like; to have the humility, gentleness and the love of a little child. We must strive to be the servant of all; serving one another is the Christian message; Jesus came to serve and was not looking for power. Jealousy and envy and the quest for power are godless qualities and the opposite to the mercy gentleness and love of God. They are the cause of much conflicts and hatred in the world and disturb our peace. When we are guided by the Spirit, the fruits of the Spirit shine through us. St Paul tells us they are love, joy, peace, patience kindness gentleness and self-control. If we are living the Gospel following Jesus' way through the sacraments and hearing the Word of God on a continual basis, we will begin to grow in the Spirit and will begin to loosen the shackles of our egos. There is no other way to overcome our own selfishness but through the power of Jesus Christ. St Therese of the child Jesus knew she was incapable of the smallest charity without the grace of Christ. But by her little way she devised to stay little and offer her littleness to God by offering the everyday annoyances and difficulties. She said Jesus did not require great deeds only her love. Let us pray that we will imitate her child-like way to Heaven.
