Week of 18 September – 22 September

Reading
In Reading this week we will continue to work with books that students can make connections with. This week we will be using author Kevin Henkes books. We will also talk about Fix-Up Strategies (what to do when you don’t know a word), as well as Just Right Reading (how do I know a book is a good fit for me). For the beginning of the year, we use classic picture books to help the students begin to engage the strategies they learned in 1st grade to help them with understanding and comprehension.
We will also continue our Leader in Me activities with the habit this week—Beginning with the End in Mind!! /
Math
In Math we will continue our unit on Place Value. We will work with ones, tens, and hundreds for the beginning of the year. It is important for the student to understand where numbers are located on a hundreds or two hundred’s chart. Being able to visualize this in their minds will help them with adding, subtracting and other manipulations of numbers. It also helps the student greatly when the numbers we use get bigger as the year progresses. We will also be working on understanding what makes a number even or odd. Even numbers always have a partner. Odd numbers always have one left over.
Questions for Home - “How many hundreds are in this number?” “How many tens are in this number?” “How many ones are in this number?” Explain how you know. “Is this number even or odd?” “How do you know?”
