COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS: I was extremely pleased by the performance of the entire squad. Our athletes honored the tradition of Webster City Cross Country in the finest of fashion. Jesse ran a strong race battling Jon Stover of Humboldt. Stover eventually took control of the race in the final mile while Jesse battled Eagle Grove’s #1 and held on for a runner-up finish. Sophomore Ben Lambert ran an exceptional race to finish 4th which was a huge performance on behalf of the team. Ethan Barnes continued his late season surge to finish 12th. It was our pack of Barnes, Hicok and Bieker which allowed us to pull off the victory over very strong team performances by Eagle Grove and Humboldt. Humboldt actually had us beat through 4 runners but it was our solid pack of 5 that allowed us to come out on top. Freshman Matt Severe had one of his better races as did Zach Turner to round out our varsity. This was our 10th of the last 11 conference titles. On the J.V. side, Jon Richardson and Devin Linn competed very well against a quality junior varsity field. Many of our other J.V. performances represented some of our season’s bests. We will now face a very challenging Atlantic district. If we can continue to show the improvement and effort displayed tonight, then I believe good things are in store for this team.

COACH BUSSAN’S COMMENTS: Our girls had an outstanding conference meet which started with our J.V. sweeping the top 4 positions in their race. It continued with a very focused and determined effort to take on Iowa Falls-Alden on their home course. IowaFalls had beaten us at the South Hardin meet a week and a half ago and was planning on taking home the championship in front of their home crowd. Our girls were very aggressive from the beginning, in some cases perhaps too aggressive, but there was no doubt that we were there to challenge for the title. Senior Emily Long used her experience, talent and toughness to emerge as our lead runner to finish 3rd. She used a particularly strong second mile to move forward in the race. Freshman Mikaela Pruismann battled for the early lead during the first mile and yet hung on to finish 4th against a very high quality field. Freshman Sarah Perin earned all conference honors with a new personal record performance, only 6 seconds behind Emily and Mikaela. Freshman Breanne Wagner battled tough to finish as our #4 and in the surprise of the night, freshman Amanda Hicok, after just making our varsity at Ft.Dodge, stepped forward with a strong 18th place performance to round out our scoring 5. Sophomore Paige Bonjour, returning to our line-up after sitting out the past two meets, made a difference by passing IowaFalls #5 runner coming to the chute. Ashley Mallinger was right behind in 23rd. To have seven girls in the top 25 and three girls in the top 10 was a real statement on our team’s part. It was our 4th of the last 5 conference championships. On the J.V. side, as mentioned earlier, we had an outstanding effort with all five of our athletes having a great race. Erin Hunt and Becky Perin, in particular, had exceptional races. It was extremely gratifying to see a line of gold jerseys coming down the home stretch together. It is becoming much clearer that our district in Atlantic is becoming more challenging that previously thought. Harlan, Denison, Dallas Center-Grimes and Winterset are all performing extremely well but so are we. It should make for a very exciting race on Thursday the 19th at 4:30 p.m. in Atlantic at Nishna Hills Golf Course.
