Web Quest 2 – Ideology in the 20th Century
Part 1 – Competency One
From the list below choose two political figures that you will compare in terms of their leftwing/rightwing orientation and in terms of their authoritarian/libertarian tendencies.
Hugo Chavez
Milton Friedman
Mahatma Gandhi
Che Guevara
Stephen Harper
Adolph Hitler
Kim Jong Il
Vladimir Lenin
René Levesque
Kwame Nkruma
Barack Obama
Margaret Thatcher
Pierre Trudeau
Malcolm X
Your task is to write two paragraphs. The first paragraph is to compare your chosen figures on the left-right spectrum. The topic sentence should argue that one is further to the left or right than the other.
The second paragraph is to compare the same two figures on the authoritarian-libertarian spectrum. Here the topic sentence should argue that one is more authoritarian or libertarian than the other.
Evaluation for the paragraphs will be based on the same rubric from our first web-quest.
Following the paragraph, draw a grid and estimate where on the political spectrum you would place your two characters.
Part 2 – Competency Two
Now on the grid you created for part one, indicate where you see yourself on the political spectrum. Then respond to the following questions:
1) Why did you place yourself where you did on the left/right spectrum? What do you find distasteful about the other side?
2) Why did you place yourself where you did on the authoritarian/libertarian spectrum? What do you find distasteful about the other side?
3) Who is your political hero? This could be anyone from past or present you believe made a positive difference in the world. In terms of the political spectrum how close do think their political values are to your own?
4) Who do you consider to be a political villain, either from history or from today’s society? In terms of the political spectrum how far do think their political values are from your own?
