Course Description:

This course covers the logical basis of computer structure, instruction codes, arithmetic and logical operations, addressing, input/output subroutines, linkages, macros, and assembly systems. Studies of algorithms and data structures in a variety of engineering applications are presented using machine language, assembly language, and higher-level languages. This course contributes to the following ABET goal: written communication, and contains heavy coverage of the following ABET goals: problem solving and the ability to apply knowledge of computer science and engineering.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, the student should:

  1. Understand the basics of computer organization, machine arithmetic and logical operations, algorithms, data structures, and theory of computation.

Text:

J. Glenn Brookshear, Computer Science-An Overview, 8th edition, Addison Wesley Longman, Inc., 2004, (7th edition of the textbook is also acceptable).

Grading Policy:

Paper-and-pencil type homeworks, lab exercise, individual programming projects and team research project will be assigned, collected and graded. Two 75-minute tests and the final exam will be given. Tests and the exam will be closed book.

In addition to achieving a passing cumulative score (typically 60%), a minimum performance of 50% must also be achieved in each of the following areas (given with weights):

Homeworks 15%

Labs 15%

Cheating Policy:

Students are encouraged to work together and learn from each other. However, cheating in any form on exams, or copying of homework or computer programs will not be tolerated. Any evidence of cheating will result in a failing grade for the course and appropriate notification will be made to the Dean’s office.

General Policies:

1.If you bring food to class, bring enough to share with everyone.

2.Soft drinks and bottled water are permitted, as long as you drink quietly, do not spill, and properly dispose of empty containers. Soft drinks and food are not permitted during the lab classes.

  1. Once the lecture starts, any student wishing to speak should raise his or her hand and wait for recognition from the instructor before speaking.
  2. Homeworks and computer project reports are due at the start of class on the due date. Lab project reports are due at the end of the lab class. Late homework will only be accepted in extenuating circumstances. Late project reports and lab reports may be accepted, subject to late penalties.

Students with Disabilities:
