What is YWP-ZA?

The Young Water Professionals (YWP-ZA) programme was started as a volunteer group in partnership with the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) as well as the International Water Association (IWA) to answer the needs of YWPs in Southern Africa. Since then the YWP programme has been officially included into the WISA structures as a division.

The aim of the YWP programme is to fulfil the present and future needs of the water and wastewater industries in Southern Africa, an aim which requires the continuous development of a workforce which is adequate in size, capable in skills and strong in leadership. YWPs are the future of the water sector, and therefore the future of socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. Without water, no other industry can function; without water, no plant or animal life can survive.

To fulfil this aim, the YWP-ZA body has the following objectives:

  • to support and facilitate YWPs to play an active role in WISA and IWA activities, and in so doing to elevate the profile of these associations;
  • to ensure the YWP-ZA programme remains relevant to YWPs;
  • to provide opportunities for YWPs to network, communicate and collaborate; and
  • to provide career development opportunities for YWPs.

What are the objectives of YWP-ZA Provincial Chapters?

  • To elevate the profile of the South African water sector in the global arena and conversely to elevate the profile of global water-related activities in South Africa by encouraging young professionals in the Province to become YWPs of the South Africa International Water Association (IWA-SA) and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) and in so doing to participate in the events of these bodies and engage with the experts of these networks.
  • To support and facilitate YWPs to play an active role in WISA and IWA activities by marketing WISA and IWA events to YWP members and collaborating with WISA and IWA where possible, to co-host events in the Province.
  • To provide opportunities for YWPs to meet and communicate by organising a calendar of events that provide a platform for YWPs in the Province to meet and network, by providing opportunities for inter-generational learning and by recruiting new members to the network.
  • To provide career development opportunities for YWPs through a diverse set of events that offer technical and academic exposure, that provide a platform for societal engagement and that develop the personal skills of members to navigate a successful career in the water sector.
  • To support employers with the recruitment and retention of YWPs by providing a platform in the Province for YWPs to meet with prospective employers and by making YWPs more attractive employees through the above outlined development opportunities.
  • To ensure the Programme remains relevant to YWPs by engaging with members at all YWP events about the relevance of the event through a feedback form.
