Web of Science Update includingJournal and Highly Cited Data Exercises May 2016

Kings College London and Newcastle University (UK) want to measure the performance of research on which they havecollaborated during the last 10 years. As well as identifying research with the highest usage count, they also want to identify which papers are the most impactful.

  1. Search for both universities using Organization Enhanced using two search fields. Combine both OE fields with ‘AND’ and select the Time Span to be 2005-2016. Search in all WOS CC Citation Indexes.
  2. What is the total number of papers for the period 2005-2016 on which Kings College and Newcastle University (UK)have collaborated?
  3. Order the results by Usage Count-last 180 days. What is the usage count of the paper with the highest count for last 180 days?
  4. Use the refine the results by ‘ESITop Papers’. How many Highly Cited and Hot Papers are retrieved?
  5. Refine by Open Access. How many records are from Open Access journals?

A funding organization wants to evaluate the performance of a researcher. You have been asked to use their ORCID identifier in order to retrieve publications as indexed in Web of Science CC. The researcher is Marco Raugei from Oxford Brookes University. The ORCID is 0000-0001-5026-8556.

  1. Clear the previous search query and return the time span to all years. . Enter 0000-0001-5026-8556in a field then run the search by selecting ‘Author Identifier’ from the search menu.
  2. How many papers are retrieved in WOS CC using the ORCID identifier?
  3. Has this researcher produced Hot or Highly Cited Papers?

A researcher is preparing to submit a paper to an open access journal. In preparation for submission they want to identify which open access journals are the top performers in a field of research. Use the Incites JCR 2014data to provide information the researcher requests.

  1. Search for journals in the category ‘biology’ and select the ‘Open Access filter’.
  2. How many OA journals are in this category? Which journal has the highest Impact Factor?
  3. Now apply the Quartile 1 filter. How many journals remain?

The researcher now wants to evaluate the performance of a specific journal which is OA and inQ 1. View the profile of the journal ‘BMC Biology’ by clicking on its title.

  1. Using the JCR 2014 data, is the Five Year Impact Factor higher or lower than the Impact Factor?
  2. Go to the Rank section for this journal. In which year was the IF Percentile the lowest value?

UseIncites Essential Science Indicators to identify the following:

  1. A researcher published a paper in 2008 in the journal ‘Food Chemistry’ (ESI= Agricultural Sciences). The researcher wants to know how many citations are currently required in order for the paper to be classified as a ‘Highly cited’paper in its field.
  2. A group of authors want to measure the performance of a paper they published in 2010 in the journal ‘Ecosystems’ (ESI= Environment/Ecology). The paper currently has a total of 20 citations.
  3. Is this papers impact better than the average (ESI= citation rates) for the field?
  4. Based on the number of citations received, in which percentile range (1%, 10%, 20% 50%) is this paper placed?
