What are dual credit classes?

Dual credit classes are college level classes taught at the high school or the college campus. The college credit earned for successful completion of the course is accepted by the high school for credit as well.

Who can take dual credit classes?

Students are eligible to take dual credit classes beginning the summer after their sophomore year.

How does a student enroll in a dual credit class?

The student will complete a Weatherford College Application for Admission available at Click on Future Students and it is listed on the right. The Early Admission Application is under the High School Counselor link or your high school counselor may already have some available in her office. These form along with a copy of your high school transcript and test scores can be mailed to Angie Atkins, Weatherford College Student Services, 225 College Park Drive, Weatherford, TX 76086.

Once these documents have been received a student can register online through Campus Connect or in person at the college campus during designated registration dates. Many high schools will also have face-to-face registration held at the high school. If available, face-to-face registration dates and times will be announced by the counselor’s office.

What are qualifying test scores?

Students taking dual credit classes must prove eligibility to take college level coursework. The student can use TAKS scores (11th grade only), ACT test scores, SAT test scores, or THEA test scores. The qualifying scores for each of these tests in listed on a separate form in this package.

Which college courses can be taken for dual credit?

The high school always makes the determination about which classes can be taken for dual credit. You should visit with the high school counselor for specific course information. Examples of courses that have been taken for dual credit are Freshman College English, U.S. History, Government, Economics, Introduction to Psychology, and Speech.

How much do the dual credit classes cost?

The cost of the dual credit class is the same as the cost of a college level course. 2011-2012 tuition information is included in this packet. The most current tuition information will be available on the College website. Unfortunately, there is no federal or state financial aid available to dual credit students. This is only available to students who have already completed high school or a GED.

Do the students have to buy books for the dual credit courses?

Yes, the student is required to use the same book that is used at the college campus for the course.

Are these “real” college classes and will they transfer to a four year university.

Yes, these are “real” college classes. The grade will be placed on an official college transcript and students are subject to all college academic standards. Poor or failing grades can result in academic probation and/or suspension.

Dual credit academic courses are transferable to all Texas public colleges and universities and to some private and out-of-state institutions. If you have a question about course transferability you should contact the college or university to which you wish to transfer.

Is there anything else I need to know?

A dual credit student is a regular college student. This allows the student to take advantage of all Weatherford College services including the library, academic and career advising, student email, and on-campus tutoring.
