Dear Families,

This week we will be focussing on transportation. Cars, trucks and buses are vehicles that your child sees on a daily basis. Through participating in the activities we have planned, the children will learn that there are many different sizes, shapes, colours and kinds of buses, trucks and cars. We will also be teaching children about the care of the inside and outside parts of the car.

We have the following activities planned for the week:

  • Painting with small cars the art table.
  • Engaging with many books on cars, trucks and buses.
  • Setting up a petrol station in the play area.
  • Identifying emergency vehicles.
  • Building cars out of boxes that the children can ‘drive’.
  • Teaching children safety measures for each vehicle. Eg, wearing seatbelts, holding on to a rail/pole if standing on a bus.

At home you can do the following activities to reinforce the concepts of cars, trucks and buses at the service.

  • Point out emergency vehicles when you are driving. Explain to children why you have to get out of an emergency vehicles way if they have their sirens on, and why you don’t have to if they don’t.
  • Let your child help wash your vehicle next time you are washing it.
  • Take your child with you to the petrol station and get them to see how many different types of vehicles come and go whilst you are filling up.

Teaching children about cars, trucks and buses, their uses in society and how to be safe when using them will increase and child’s interest and awareness in the world around them
