Dear Eagles,

We’ve had a great beginning to the school year! Students got the Red Carpet treatment as they walked into the building on the first morning last week, and we did it again for kindergarten students today. Last Wednesday we had Real Soccer player Charlie Adams here to cheer on our students as well as our staff and parents. They all looked awesome, and we are ready for a great year!

Eagle Expections

We have new Eagle Expectations for all students this year. They include:

·Be safe

·Be kind

·Be responsible

·Be respectful

Thanks, Lynne Burns, for helping create our posters as we roll out the new expectations!

Volunteers

We love volunteers at Silver Mesa. Your time is greatly appreciated. It is required to sign up each year, but it only takes a minute. Here’s a link to the application:

Playworks/PE Technician Needed

Parents and community members: Are you interested in working with elementary-aged students a couple of mornings each week? We are in need of a Playworks/PE technician on Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings for our 3rd and 4th graders here at Silver Mesa. Please reply to this email if you’d like more details.

Before School Computer Lab time

Thanks to great volunteer efforts, the computer lab here at the school is open from 7:30-8:10 every morning. Students can come work on their keyboarding skills, math skills or reading skills before school starts. This has already begun and will be available all year. We will have Moby Max, Reflex Math, and other programs for student use. We are looking for any volunteers who could help supervise one morning a week or perhaps fill in when needed. Let us know if you’d be available to help out with that. It is through our awesome volunteers that we are able to offer this service to the Silver Mesa community.

Spirit Day

Every Friday is Spirit Day at Silver Mesa! Please wear a spirit shirt or our school colors: blue and white. However, this Friday we are celebrating our new kindergarten class of 2030 and their College Readiness Day. We invite our students to wear college spirit wear to school that day.

School Community Council

Are you interested in being on the SCC? Today is the last day to turn in your candidate form. You can pick up a form in the front office. Meetings are held once a month at 7:15 am in the school library.

After School Pick-up

Don’t forget that Friday is early-out day every week. School is dismissed at 1:15 pm on Fridays and 2:55 pm all the other days. Our usual procedure is to supervise students outside for 15 minutes after school has been dismissed. At that point, any students who have not been picked up yet are invited inside to call their parents. All students exit the building on the west or south side and then make their way to the front. The exception is 1st graders. First grade students exit the building through their doors at the front of the building. On the southeast fence there are four different colored signs that make great meeting places for siblings and friends to meet up: blue, yellow, green, & red.

PTA News

Tomorrow, Tuesday August 29th, is Spirit Night at Chick Fil A at the Southtown location from 5-7pm. If you are going out to eat think about going there! We get a kick back for everything sold thatnight!

We would like to encourage you to join the PTA this year for only $5.00. There is no volunteering required. If you do have time, we would love the help. The PTA provides valuable programs and activities for the students and faculty all year. Please join today!

Please send back your volunteer sheets, membership and spirit wear by this Friday!

Our 2017/2018 Silver Mesa PTA Fundraiser is just around the corner! We are really excited to announce theJump-a-Thonas our fundraiser for this year. We will kick-off the fundraiser with a wonderful assemblyon Friday, September 1st.The donation envelopes will also go home with the students on that Friday. The following week,September 5 – 7thwe will have fun jump rope activities for the students to do during their recess. The school wide Jump-a-Thon will be heldon Friday, September 8th.Each grade will go out separately and have their Jump-a-Thon and then will have the opportunity to purchase concessions when they are finished. This is a great way to teach our students a new skill and encourage an active lifestyle.

On Friday, September 8that 7:30we will have a Family Movie Night. This will be a really fun event to wrap up a fun week. We will be watching a compilation of Disney/ Pixar Short films. We thought this would help the families with little kiddos to not have to stay out so late. If the school as a whole reaches our fundraiser goal of $15,000 then we will have a dunk tank at the movie night and the kiddos will get the opportunity to dunk some of Silver Mesa’s teachers and even the principal!!! We will also have concessions on sale during the movie and at intermission.

We are hoping that each student can donate a minimum of $25.00 as that would help us meet our goal. We feel very fortunate that we have been able to lower that amount for the students the last 2 years! And what a small price to pay for all the wonderful programs the Silver Mesa PTA brings into our school!!

REFLECTIONS Encourage your child to enter the Reflections Arts Program this year. Students create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. This year’s theme is "Within Reach". Entries aredue September 28.

We are excited for this new year and want you to know how grateful we are for each volunteer! We do it because we love our students!!
