We have made it to the summative part of the course. Your summative evaluation is a study of a specific CITY in Canada. Cities will be chosen by students. No two students will be studying the same city.

  • TASK: You are required to prepare a Travel Poster or Scrapbook that contains interesting information about the information outlined below.

-Be creative! Don’t be afraid to discuss different ways of setting up your project with your teacher!!!

-Go through the exam outline and incorporate as many terms and concepts from the course as you can into your summative project. Show that you ‘can use this stuff’…

  • CONTENT: For your city, you must include the following elements:
  • Your ‘title page’ must be a map of Canada with your city indicated on the map.
  • You must include all map requirements on any maps you produce.
  • Throughout the project you must incorporate at least 2 maps, 3 visuals (pictures), a graph or chart, and give a list of sources for the information you have used.
  • The written sections of the assignment must be in your own words and you must give the sources for the information you have used. All sources used must be listed on a ‘Work Cited’ page attached at the end of the scrapbook or on the back of the poster.

Note: You have choices. Check off the choices as you complete them.

Word Banks: Use a selection of the following terms/ concepts in the text of your summative. Be sure to use the terms in context for the courseandunderline the terms as they appear in your work. You must use a Minimum 3 terms from each Topic listed below. You are not limited to using these terms only, but most of these should somehow be incorporated into your summative!!!!

Physical Geography

Landform: Geologic history, Geologic processes, plate tectonics, specific landform region

Climate: continental or maritime, effect of elevation, effect of latitude, weather, moderating effect of water bodies, specific climate region

Soils and Vegitation: leached or calcified, quality of soil (reasons for it’s quality), Soil Region, specific Vegetation Region, conditions for agriculture present

Ecozone: ecozone boundaries, transition zone, specific ecozone region, climate, landform, vegetation

Economic Geography

Primary: resource extraction, type of industry, direct/ indirect employment, multiplier effect, location factors, basic/ non-basic employment

Secondary: location factors of industry, type of manufacturing, multiplier effect, JIT delivery,

value $ to the city

Tertiaty: type of service, Tertiary or Quaternary or Quinary, number of jobs, value $ to the city

Location Factors: list and explain the main location factors for you city’s industry

Cultural Geography

Population stats: birth rates, death rates, immigration rates, emigration rates, population

pyramids (age distribution), dependency load

Cultural diversity: immigration patterns, chain migration, ethnic origins, international/ provincial migration, pull factors for your city

TransportaTion Links: rail, shipping, highways, major roads, air, proximity to neighbouring

cities

*This project is like an exam! The due date is not flexible, unless you have a medical certificate filed with the office or other acceptable documentation. Official documentation is required.

Use the class textbook as a source of information. You do not have to use the internet much for this summative. In fact using the internet will SLOW YOU DOWN!!!

Set aside some time each night to finish off something you didn’t get done in class

Solve problems right away. Remember, your teacher can help you.

Work on the sections one topic at a time.

SAVE your work ON YOUR SCHOOL ACCOUNTeach day. You are responsible for any lost work, corrupt files, etc. Make back-up copies!

Don’t:

  • Underestimate how important this is. It is worth 20% of your FINAL grade!
  • Plagiarize. You MUST note where all your information was found. Also, put the information into your own words.
