Year 1

Term 3 2018

We have had a wonderful time working with your children this year. We were so proud of their amazing Christmas performance of ‘A King is Born’.

We are very excited about our new topic for next term - ‘Ice and Fire’. We will initially be focusing on ‘ice’ and in Term 4 we will focus on ‘fire’. Our history lessons will look at the events surrounding the sinking of the ‘Titanic’ and we will be developing the children’s historical enquiry skills and their sense of chronology.

In science, we will be looking at everyday uses of materials and we shall be carrying out some scientific experiments!

In English, we will continue to focus on the development of phonic and handwriting skills. Thank you for your support with helping your children to learn and remember the sounds in their phonics wallets. This term we will also be exploring fables. We will be reading a variety of fables and the children will be responding to them in their written work. If you have any fables at home, please share these with your children to consolidate their understanding.Later in the term, the children will be writing non-fiction reports based on their understanding of our ‘Titanic’ topic. The children will continue to bring home spellings. Thank you for your continued support with helping your child to learn these. Also, please remember to hear your child read at least 5 times each week. They love receiving their stickers / stamps when they achieve this!

In maths, we will be consolidating work on counting collections of objects and also reading and writing numbers within 100. Please continue to practise counting forwards and backwards in ones to and just over 100 and also to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. We will also be focusing on the rapid recall of number bonds. Quick recall of these facts will be tested in our weekly maths challenge. Each time the children beat their own scores they achieve a dojo point. Later in the term we will be learning to tell the time, starting with telling the time to the hour and half past the hour. We will also be practising saying the days in a week and months in a year in order. Please also continue to encourage your children to use RM Easimaths. Dojo points will be awarded to those children who complete this homework.

Please could all children have their P.E. kit in school at all times including plimsolls and track suit top and bottoms for colder weather. Please remember to name all items of clothing.

Show and Tell for this term will be; (Bumblebees and Dragonflies Weds, Squirrels Y1 Thursday)
