Health and Physical Education-Teacher Certification (HPE-TC)

PRE-PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE(PPE) GUIDELINES

Required of all undergraduate HPE-TC teacher candidates. Post-

baccalaureate and second degree candidates must only fulfill

the convention requirement.

The 30 hour teaching requirement MUST BE completed prior to

KIN402 Physical Education Practicum

PPE I: EARLY FIELD EXPERIENCE (EFE)

Complete all documentations forms included in this packet and turn in Forms A, B and C to Dr. Fran Cleland, Office 212.

30 hours of Teaching in a Physical Activity Setting

Teacher candidates must accrue 30 hours of teaching/supervisingchildren or adolescents within an organized physical education or physical activityprogram.

  • 15 of the 30 hours should be with children from an ethnic/cultural minority group (e.g.,

African American, Latino, and/or children of predominantly low income families). NB: it

should be evident that at least 50% of your population possess one or more of these

characteristics.

Experiences may include assisting in a health and/or physical educationclass, an intramural sport, or a physical activity program including adapted physical activities (excluding KIN205/206 lab), coaching, or leading groups of children in an after-school physical activity. Adapted minors must only fulfill the 15 hour diversity requirement.

The teaching/coaching experience must:

  • Be supervised by a Health & Physical Education teacher, coach, recreation specialist, or

administrator of the program. It must be in a setting that is physically active and one in which the

teaching of motor skills is the focus.

  • Provide opportunities for instructional interaction with children in a teaching, coaching, or helping situation (not serving as a referee, score keeper, or other minor role).

Additional Requirements

1)Up-to-Date Act 120 Clearances (clearances are valid for one calendar year). You will provide the department secretary with a copy of these clearances for entry into your academic file folder (in department office 206) and bring the originals to your EFE site on the first day of the experience. Clearances include, 1) Child Abuse Clearance, 2) PA Criminal Background Check, 3) TB Clearance, and 4) FBI Clearance.

2)Wear your WCUphysical educationuniform to the experiences.

3)Complete Form A and attach it to the following summary of your teaching experience.

4)Written/Type Summary of 30 Hour Teaching Experience – Please address the following questions:
a)What were your duties and responsibilities at each experience?
b)What did you learn about children that you can use in your K-12 teaching?
c)In what ways was diversity addressed in this experience: race, class, culture, or socioeconomic status and what did you learn about culture other than your own?
d)What about this teaching experience has further excited you about entering the teaching profession?
e)What unique characteristics did you observe among the children/adolescents you worked with?
f)What were the challenges of this teaching/coaching experience?
g)What were your strengths/areas needing improvement with respect to planning and/or implementing activities for the children/adolescents you worked with?
Other – please provides additional insights/reflections not addressed by the questions above

5)If your teaching/coaching experience is OFF CAMPUS, you must provide a letter on letterheadfrom the agency/school(s) where you completed the teaching/coaching experience. Attach these letters to Form A and the above written/typed summary.

Tips and Suggestions

1)You are solely responsible for introducing yourself, asking about the possibilities of doing work with an agency, and writing a thank you letter to the agency. Arrive on time for every session.

2)Call and inform the site ahead of time if you are unable to work when scheduled.

3)Define an appropriate set of responsibilities for your early field /service-learning experience.

4)Be patient, and be productive! Make the best use of your time at the agency

PPE II:PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT IN CONFERENCES

REQUIRED PRIOR TO GRADUATION

Prior to STUDENT TEACHING, teacher candidates (regular undergraduate, post-baccalaureate certification only and second-degree students) must attend one conference for a minimum of 2 consecutive days or two one day conferences (15 hours approximately). (One day can be accrued at one conference and another day at a different conference.)

  • National AAHPERD
  • Mid-Atlantic or National AEE
  • District EDA
  • State PSAHPERD conference
  • Local Southeastern District PSAHPERD conference

Requirements

1)Attend 15 hours of sessions at one or more State, Local, and/or National Conventions counting ONLY the time in seminars.

2)Proof of Attendance MUST include:

  1. A registration receipt and name tag
  2. Completed Form B: Convention Attendance Worksheet (You will need multiple copies of this form to summarize each session you have attended)
