WATKINS RESERVE

REVISEDLANDSCAPE CONCEPT PLAN

Dear Resident,

Thank you for participating in the recent public consultation process regarding the Draft Watkins Reserve Landscape Concept Plan.

Based on your feedback, it was clear that retaining as much open space at Watkins Reserve was important. I am pleased to advise that a new storm water management technique has been devised that significantly reduces the footprint of the originally proposed basin.

Please find attached a copy of the revised landscape concept plan for your reference.

Storm Water Management Re-design

To reduce flooding, beach scouring and erosion in heavy rainfall events, the original design used a large swale drain and basin to slow-down the flow of water and to capture water from the Nepean Highway in heavy rainfall events. The size and depth of the original basin was quite large due to the depth of the existing storm water pipe system in the park.

The new stormwater management design has eliminated the need for a large retarding basin by:

  • Constructing a new underground storm water drain at a more suitable height
  • The construction of a much smaller retardingbasin
  • The construction of an underground rainwater tank to store water in heavy rainfall events thereby reducing beach erosion
  • The construction of a new diversion pipe along the dune to further reduce beach scouring.

The small timber deck sits on top of the underground water storage tank.

Revised Key elements of the Draft Landscape Concept Plan

Key elements of the Draft Landscape Concept Plan include:

Road reconstruction

  • Road reconstruction including new drainage, kerb and channel, asphalt.
  • The creation of a pedestrian/vehicle shared zone at the beach entrance.
  • Parallel car parking on the northern side of the park will be retained to further minimise the use of open space.

Park improvements

  • New paths
  • Boardwalk
  • Park lighting
  • New park furniture
  • Improved lawn and new park trees

PTO

Beach Access

  • Construct a new boardwalk access ramp from Watkins Street to the beach

Next Steps

Having been able to successfully adapt the design to respond to public feedback, we plan to start the construction in late Autumn, 2014.

We value your feedback!
