Basic Information
The Water Research Institute is a government-subsidized organization managed by the Ministry of the Environment of the SlovakRepublic. It is a leading scientific-research institute with an (inter)national scope, conducting comprehensive water management research and other activities resulting from the needs of water management in Slovakia.
Its core activities include scientific research, development programmes as well as professional consulting and advisory services in the field of water management and water-ecology. WRI scientists lead research in various areas including hydrology, hydraulics, water quality, and water treatment technology.
The institute continually carries out updating of basic data for the national conceptions, water management documents, and legislative tools and provides database administration of the national water management information system. WRI also comprises the National Water Reference Laboratory, which conducts water analyses and interprets biological, chemical, physical and bacteriological tests of water.
WRI research is important to the conservation and protection of Slovakia’s water resources.
Since 2001, the institute is strongly involved in the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.
Nowadays, WRI forms a core scientific-research base for the water management sector. The institute has five departments: Technical Standardization and Information, Hydrology and Hydraulics, Water Management Development, Water Quality and Water Treatment Technology, National Water Reference Laboratory for Slovakia.
WRI has 200 employees, of which about 50% have a university degree.
Brief History
1951 / The institute has been constituted by former Ministry of Civil Engineering Industry as a branch of the Water Research Institute Prague by merging theInstitute of Hydrology and Hydraulic Laboratory.1952 / The Department of Ameliorationwas affiliated. The institute comprised four departments: hydrology, hydraulics, water quality and Amelioration
1958 / The institute moved to the new building equipped with modern laboratories to improve research in the area of water management
1959 / The Department of Amelioration was detached
1968 / The institute was defined as an independent legal entity and renamed as the Water Research Institute Bratislava (WRI)
1975 / System of funding was changed – former state budget organization was transformed to contributory organization.
1976 / WRI was affiliated with the “Vodorozvoj” organization
1991 / The restructuralisation of the institute took place, according to requirements of new market economy, the management was changed, external conditions, which influenced the activities of the institute, changed radically
1992 / WRI became a member of many specialized international organizations.
1997 / National Water Reference Laboratory for Slovakia was established
2004 / WRI changed governance from MoA SR toMoE SR
2005 / WRI received ISO 9001 for quality management system

Introduction
On behalf of the organising committee, we have the honour to invite you and your co-workers to the International Conference “Towards Integrated River Basin Management“ to be held on 29 May – 2 June 2006 at the Conference Centre, Častá-Papiernička. The conference is organized on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Water Research Institute and at the same time an inauguration of the Expert Consulting and Advisory Centre at Water Research Institute for the Visegrad countries and EU accession countries.
The conference is organized under the auspices of the Minister of Environment of the Slovak Republic. At the conference there will be awarded the WRI experts and Dutch professionals participating in development of cooperation within the Memorandum of Understanding between the Slovak Republic and Netherlands.
Conference Goal
The goal of the conference is to create a room for presentation of the latest knowledge in the field of river basin management aimed at water resources protection and for international expert discussion.
Themes and Scope:
The official languages of the conference are English and Slovak. The conference consists of two simultaneoussessions:
SessionA –Expert Consultations is held at Congress hall; translation will be providedvia two interpreters.
Session B – WRI Conference is held at session hall.
Workshop on UNU – LEM Slovakia is held at one lecture hall.

The conference will be held at the Special Facility of the Office of the National Council of the SlovakRepublic in Častá – Papiernička. The facility lies in a beautiful nature surrounded bythe Little Carpathians Mountain Range approximately 40 km to the northwest of Bratislava. There are numerous historical monuments and places of interest. The region is known by its folk art such as folk costumes, embroideries, the famous Modra pottery and wine-growing traditions. The easily accessible historical places are Modra, Pezinok and the castle Červený Kameň.

Official languages of the conference are Slovak and English. The simultaneous interpretation is provided only in session A – experts consultations.
Conference proceedings:
All accepted papers and abstracts of posters will be published in conference proceedings which will be available before this event, so the participants could receive it.Full power point presentation will be transferred to PROTECTED pdf format and burn on a CD. The CD will be send to participants together with photos after the event.
