Pico/Kenter Storm Drain (10 minutes):

  • Staying on Pico, cross Ocean and head toward the beach.
  • Point out storm drains and trash in the street.
  • Ask Crew Members what impact our actions have on the watershed.
  • Follow Pico downhill to the beach and the storm drain.
  • On the ground you will notice what looks like a river running from a mountain area to SM, you can use this image to describe a watershed and discuss urban runoff.
  • Keeping trash and chemicals out of the streets and our lawns keeps these things out of the ocean. SMURRF helps reduce the amount of trash in the bay and recycles runoff water to assist with water conservation.

Walk to SMURRF and Tour (30 minutes):

  • From Pico/Kenter, follow the bike path toward the Santa Monica Pier.
  • Turn right when you reach the pier (Heal the Bay Aquarium is on your left, pizza place is on your right) and follow sidewalk/stairs to SMURRF.
  • Use posted signs, artwork, visual aids and info sheet to discuss SMURRF.
  • When done, follow SMURRF sidewalk up toward Ocean Street.
  • Head left on Ocean (north) to Bus Stop at Ocean & Colorado (beach side of the street)
