TASK SHEET – MAKING FRIENDS WITH EMIS

EMIS = Egton Medical Information Service = Basically, our computer system which maintains patient records electronically.

Aim

To get you familiar with EMIS! You will be seeing patients in your own allocated surgery next week and the idea of this session is for you to get to know the computer system beforehand to make those surgeries easier.

General Task(s)

Play around with EMIS. Use “Tommy Test” as the patient to practice on. Don’t worry, you won’t ruin our system by playing with him.

Specific Tasks

·  Switch everything off. Starting from scratch, turn on and log in.

·  Find the patient “Tommy Test”

Tommy Test comes in to see you with an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) for 4 days, main problems – slight cough, non asthmatic, smoker 20/day, sore throat +, Examination : ENT : mild erythema of fauces, nil else, nil nodes. You decide to give him Pholcodine linctus 5ml qds 300ml bottle. You decide to ask him to come in again if it doesn’t settle in 1 week.

Add theses clinical details to his record

Prescribe him (and print off the script) for pholcodine lintus.

How do you add in follow up notes?

·  By the way, when was the last time Tommy Test had an FBC?

(looking up values) – V for Values in medical record

Enough for 1 day

-  Other useful things : Templates, Home Visits

-  These are the basics and should be enough to get you started. It is better to learn the rest of the system in context by “doing as you are seeing real patients”.

-  Try and brush up your computer typing skills. If you feel you are really bad at typing, consider using a program called “Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing” – a fun interactive way to pick up typing skills in a jiffy. Most novices will become efficient after 2 weeks (1 hour each day). This is a life long skill worth developing now……go on, take the plunge. You won’t regret it.

-  Don’t worry too much though. You will get better and better within a few weeks.
