Water Exercise Instructor

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Pool Manager, a Water Exercise Instructor assumes the responsibility to provide water exercise fitness classes, enforce all pool rules; and performs other related duties, as assigned. The Stevenson Community Pool takes pride in providing excellent customer service. Water Exercise Instructor responsibilities include, but are not limited to: teaching water exercise, maintaining constant supervision of customers in the pool area, enforcing the aquatics policies and procedures, maintaining a clean pool environment, completing reports, as needed. Secondary responsibilities may include: assisting with special events, care of pool equipment, attending monthly mandatory in-services, maintaining first aid certifications.

Essential Functions

  1. Have a lesson plan or workout outline for each class.
  2. Convey a fun, positive experience and motivation for participants.
  3. Be friendly, enthusiastic and caring towards participants in your class.
  4. Give feedback to participants on posture, form and progress.
  5. Provide a good mixture of demonstration, explanation and skill correction during each class.
  6. Keep class active and aerobic for at least 25-30 minutes of a 55-minute class.
  7. Set a good example of proper pool conduct for participants to follow such as: Water Bottle, Courteous, Lead in Putting Equipment Away.
  8. Communicate with Pool Managers.
  9. Coordinate with Pool Managers to take on classes/shifts.
  10. Once assigned classes, take ownership: show up early to set up equipment – be on deck to welcome and interact with participants.
  11. Find own substitutes for classes.
  12. Network with other Instructors via provided phone and email lists.
  13. Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.

  16. Available to work morning, evenings and/or weekends.
  17. Minimize and eliminate hazardous situations; ensures policies, rules, and regulations are observed.

  19. Perform Water Exercise Instructor duties; provide CPR and first aid, as needed.
  20. Provide excellent parent/customer communication regarding exercises; body position, posture, level of activity, alternate exercises.
  21. Prepare and complete written reports, including progression cards.
  22. Maintain a positive attitude; operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner; and perform related duties and responsibilities, as required.
  23. Provides excellent customer service. Assists in upholding and enforcing pool rules, administration regulations, and state and local board policy.

  25. Maintains the cleanliness of the pool and surrounding areas.

  31. Uses First Aid knowledge and techniques to give emergency First Aid.Acts properly and swiftly in the event of an incident or emergency.
  32. Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.

Other Functions

  1. Performs other related duties for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. The may include,basic maintenance, customer communication, and other related aquatic relatedduties.
  2. Knowsunderstands and enforces all pool rules and policies; provides interpretation to customers in a tactful, effective and professional manner.
  3. Maintain all certifications.
  4. Assists in maintaining supplies through good communication. Recommends water exercise equipment,
  5. Provides recognition of possible hazards and reports to pool management.
  6. Helps manage behavior of customers to ensure safety. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior, as needed.
  7. Provides care and protection of equipment.
  8. Assists individuals with special needs, abilities, learning levels, and physical limitations as needed.
  9. Maintains physical fitness and teach skills through scheduled trainings.
  10. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior as is expected of all employees.
  11. Maintains professional growth by attending in-service and meetings as requested/required.
  12. Performs other related duties assigned by the Pool Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Participation or completion of a High School Diploma program or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) program, or higher is preferred. Teaching experience preferred, but not required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Water Safety Instructor certification not required. Group Fitness teaching experience preferred. Current Adult, Child, Infant CPR/AED/First Aid certification.

Must possess current certificationin: 1) First Aid/CPRCertification.A Water Exercise certification and/or from any aquatic certification program is preferred, but not required.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

Must be able to pass both written and water skills tests; must be able to maintain physical fitness.; must have ability to learn to operate public (ADA) pool lift, as requested; must maintain the knowledge and ability to use the latest techniques and skills in water exxercise.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions; ability to deal with emergency situations; ability to work with others in a congenial manner; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use technology required to perform the job.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 1% sitting, 20% walking, and 79% standing in and around the water, and/or getting in and out of the water. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to pass swimming skill and endurance tests.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and /or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities.

ABILITY to attend scheduled activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Current training in Portland Parks Water Fitness Instructor Training Program. 1. Within one year of employment must obtain National Certification in Water Fitness Training. 2. Attend required quarterly Water Exercise Inservices, home pool Staff Inservices. 3. Wear professional fitness attire: swim suit, shorts or bike shorts, water/dock shoes. 4. Teach classes from pool deck (or in some cases be able to get in and out of water for deck demonstrations. 5. Be 15 years of age or older. 6. Experience in the water a must. It is best if you have experience participating in water fitness classes or teaching group fitness classes.
