Waste and Recycling Policy Penryn Campus
- The Penryn Campus is jointly owned and occupied by Falmouth University (Falmouth) and the University of Exeter (UoE). The Penryn estate is managed on behalf of the institutions by their service provider; Falmouth Exeter Plus. Falmouth Exeter Plus is an exempt charity wholly owned by Falmouth and UoE.
- The Penryn Campus Environmental Policy asserts the two higher education institutions’ commitment towards improving overall environmental performance and includes an aim to ‘implement measures to reduce the amount of waste generated through all activities, as well as promoting re-use, and recycling’.
- Falmouth, UoE and Falmouth Exeter Plus are committed to the principles of sustainable waste management through reducing their consumption of materials and the unnecessary use of raw materials. In accordance with the ‘Reduce, Re-use, Recycle Waste Hierarchy’; we will, where possible, prioritise the re-use of materials, and then encourage and enable recycling, composting and/or energy recovery.
- This Waste and Recycling Policy is in accordance with, and elaborates on, the overarching Environmental Policy document for the Penryn Campus. The management of waste and recycling at the Penryn Campus is the responsibility of the universities’ joint venture organisation; Falmouth Exeter Plus.
- Policy Statement
We will reduce landfill waste and when disposal is the only option we will dispose of materials in an environmentally responsible manner. We recognise the impact of the transport, treatment and disposal of resources and subsequent wastes on our local and global environment, and on our carbon footprint. We are committed to reducing this impact through the continued improvement of our recycling and waste management practices, good procurement practice and the promotion of sustainable behaviour amongst members of the Campus community.
- Actions:
We will actively encourage the re-use of items such as furniture, the composting and chipping of all garden waste arising. For all items that cannot be re-used we will promote recycling which as a minimum will include; office waste paper, cardboard, computers & other electrical equipment, mobile phones, toner cartridges, cans, textiles, plastics, glass, batteries, wood and fluorescent light tubes.
In order to accomplish our aims we will:
•Provide dedicated waste and recycling operatives with responsibility to oversee the identification, separation and collection of recycling,
•give guidance and information to staff and students to facilitate their participation in the recycling of their waste,
•run regular recycling and environment workshops and events to maintain knowledge and awareness amongst the students and wider campus community,
•set annual campus wide targets to help ensure the total amount of waste diverted from landfill continues to increase and we that our recycling rates see a continual improvement,
•monitor and report annually through our Waste and Recycling Strategy; the percentage of total waste on campus sent to landfill and the amount of waste diverted from landfill either through re-use, energy recovery, composting and recycling,
•work with all staff and relevant external agencies to ensure that adequate waste management and recycling facilities are available,
•encourage the consideration of ‘cradle to grave’ impacts and promote opportunities to re-use materials and/or incorporate recyclates into all our procurement decision making,
•ensure this Waste and Recycling Policy is regularly reviewed, documented, implemented and retained, and
•annually report on and review the PenrynCampus Waste and Recycling Strategy.
Falmouth Exeter Plus’ Head of Facilities Operations will be the responsible officer for reporting on actions contained within this policy. The overall responsibility for waste and recycling management lies with Falmouth Exeter Plus’ Senior Executive Team (SET), who are advised by the Environmental Sustainability Working Group (ESWG). The ESWG is composed of appropriate members of senior staff from Falmouth, UoE and Falmouth Exeter Plus. Day to day responsibility for managing the Waste and Recycling Policy falls under the remit of the Estates Team’s Waste and RecyclingSub-Group.
All campus users (staff and students) share the responsibility for implementing the actions and meeting targets as set out in the Waste and Recycling Action Plan.
