College Sustainability Report Card 2011

Overall grade

B

GreenReportCard.org is the first website to provide in-depth sustainability profiles for more than 300colleges in all 50 U.S. states andeight Canadian provinces.

Executive Summary

Overview: The College Sustainability Report Card is the only independent evaluation of campus and endowment sustainability activities at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. In contrast to the academic focus on sustainability in research and teaching, the Report Card examines colleges and universities, as institutions, through the lens of sustainability.

Sustainability signifies meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Are these considerations guiding how resources are managed in campus operations and endowment practices? The Report Card is designed to identify colleges and universities that are leading by example on sustainability. The aim is to provide accessible information for schools to learn from each other’s experiences and establish more effective sustainability policies.

Just as the grading system serves as an incentive in the classroom, the Report Card’s grading system seeks to encourage sustainability as a priority in college operations and endowment investment practices by offering independent yearly assessments of progress. The focus is on policies and practices in nine main categories:

Administration, Climate Change & Energy,Food & Recycling,Green Building,Student Involvement,Transportation,Endowment Transparency,Investment Priorities,Shareholder Engagement

The ongoing sustainability benefits associated with the products and services BioLogix has been providing Washington University are numerous. Consider:
1)Wash-U has eliminated their monthly grease trap pumping by utilizing a 100% natural, safe environmental service program that incorporates BioLogical products that consume the grease, fats, oils and other organic wastesand converts them to harmless compounds of Co2 & H2O. on-site.
1A- This alternative approach to pumping eliminates the fuel needed and emissions generated for a commercial pump truck to travel to and from the location and back to the MSD. Eliminates the time, resources and liabilities associated with relocating a prohibitive waste from one location to another. Eliminates the entire disposal, treatment and processing procedures the MSD must do to safely re-dispose of this waste. Due to this approach, Washington University has been directly responsible for eliminating over 250,000 gallons of grease trap waste by bio-remediating it on-site since incorporating the BioLogix service.
2)Wash-U has incorporated an environmental drain line treatment program that utilizes a specific blend of naturally occurring microorganisms to consume the grease fats and oils that enter the drain lines on a daily basis and turn them into CO2 & H2O.
2A- The benefits associated with this service include the elimination of ongoing line blockages caused by grease build-up that then require emergency service.Which would include unnecessary fuel consumption to and from your facility, energy consumption to power all equipment used and any emissions generated by vehicles and equipment used throughout the process. By pre-treating the wastes leaving your campuses prior to entering the city’s sewer lines, the wastewater is already in a state of bio-remediation and easier to process once it reaches the local MSD’s wastewater treatment plant. This reduces the energy required to process Washington University’s waste due to the fact it is already in an advanced state of degregation.
3)The BioLogix service also incorporates electronic monitoring reports, invoicing, quarterly reviews and fund transfers in conjunction with Washington University staff, making the entire process paperless.
