CALL FOR SPEAKERS: Proposals due November 15, 2013

We are pleased to invite interested speakers to submit proposals for concurrent sessions at our 12th annual conference. We seek experienced, dynamic, clear speakers who can present their experience with topics related to patient safety and engage effectively with our diverse set of attendees. We strongly encourage speakers from across the care spectrum: long-term care, home-based care, ambulatory and outpatient, inpatient. The sessions will address the following themes (examples are illustrative only, and are not limiting or comprehensive):

  • Engaging patients and families in their care;for example,
  • Recruiting and working with patient and family advisors
  • The patient and family advisor perspective
  • Preparing for health care encounters
  • Using shared decision-making for safer care
  • Medication safety: using personal medicine lists; for example,
  • Developing innovative partnerships to promote the use of medicine lists
  • The effect of medicine lists on safety, avoiding harm, and/or cost and utilization
  • Improving communication between health care providers; for example,
  • Using Team STEPPS
  • Streamline and standardizing communication
  • Dealing with disrespectful behavior
  • Sharing lessons from root cause analyses; for example,
  • Bringing patients and families into the process

Important information:

  • We do not pay an honorarium for presenting at these sessions; however, we do cover speakers’ reasonable travel costs, including lodging for out-of-towners.
  • Speakers receive FREE registration and are encouraged to attend the entire conference day.
  • There are two formats for presentations:
  • 60 minute session (inclusive of presentation, discussion, and Q&A) running concurrently with four other sessions.
  • 20 minute “high intensity talk” in general session, followed by small-group discussions.
  • We strongly prefer that each 60-minute session have only one speaker; a request for more than one speaker (or a panel) must have a strong rationale, which will be considered by the planners. The 20 minute high intensity talks must be presented by one speaker.
  • Each speaker whose proposal is accepted will sign and return by December 31 a Letter of Agreement which specifies timeline, responsibilities, and deliverables (see sample attached). If a speaker does not meet the conditions specified in the LOA, the conference organizers may rescind the invitation to speak.

If you are interested, please complete and return the attached form (or provide in a different document the information requested on the form) by November 15. Be sure to attach the speaker’s CV or resume. Applicants will be notified of the decision by December 13.
