Dear Parents,

The children have all settled well after the Easter break and are enjoying our topic on Traditional Tales. This half term we will be taking part in a wide range of activities linked to our topic, including acting out stories, exploring characters, making puppets, planting beanstalks and making porridge.

In phonics the Little Acorns will be beginning to learn the phase 2 letter sounds, we will be identifying words that begin with these sounds and we will be learning to form these letters correctly. Each week the children will bring home phonics sheets for homework. These are to keep you informed of the sounds they are learning and for the children to share their learning with you at home. The Reception children will be beginning to learn the phase 5 letter sounds and they will be using their phonic knowledge to decode regular words, read them aloud accurately and write them in ways which match their spoken sounds. They will also be learning to read and spell some common irregular words.

In maths we will be exploring capacity, weight, length, shape, pattern and time. The Little Acorns will be counting, recognising, matching, estimating, comparing and order numbers to 10. The Reception children will be adding and subtracting two single-digit numbers and beginning to add and subtract from two-digit numbers. They will solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

PE will usually take place on a Tuesday and Friday, alternate weeks for the Little Acorns. Children need a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of trainer for these sessions as they will be taking place outside for the majority of the summer term. Girls that wear tights will also need a pair of socks. Can you please ensure that all clothing (both PE kit and school uniform) is clearly labelled with your child’s name as we have a lot of mix ups with clothing due to the lack of labelling. Children with earrings need to have microporous tape to cover them with during PE.

We usually go to the school library on a Thursday and children will have the opportunity to borrow a book which will be changed each week if the previous book has been returned.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to catch me at the end of the morning session or at home time.
