AP LITERATURE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 2016/

WANT TO PROVE TO A COLLEGE YOU CAN READ???

This is the summer assignment for LA4AP Literature, or Senior AP English, if you need that tidbit.

Do the following before August 5:

1.  Buy How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. Edition doesn’t matter; no digital copies—not on this one!

2.  Read it cover-to-cover (should take just a few hours). H2R, as a book, is a wonderful conversation with a very knowledgeable professor.

3.  Highlight interesting/informative sections of the book as you encounter them.

4.  Bring the heavily annotated (that means full-of notes—yes, your job is to write all over this book!) and well-worn paperback first day.

5.  Then I’ll know you can read and you mean business.

6.  Then I’ll give you a test. This is a difficult open-answer, long-form assurance that you read this.

7.  Then we’ll read/write as much/as masterfully as we can until next May.

8.  Then you’ll graduate and not feel like a slacker for taking all “easy” classes, and probably not have to take remedial English in college.

9.  If you were to have cataclysmic valleys of idle time, you could do worse than read Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë or Paradise Lost by John Milton, but that’s just if you feel like you need it. Welcome to AP Literature, where you’ll make choices.

10.  Fall in love with reading. Then you should be truly confident. We are reading c.100 pages/week, so get ready to hit your stride with a college-level reading load.

11.  See you on the beach…till August. J Mr. Brasington
