Mr. Walter W. Young, Jr., is a student at Capella University. He will be attending the 15th Annual Emergency Management Higher Education Conference from the great State of New Jersey. He is truly excited to be participating in the conference for two important reasons. First, Mr. Young is excited because he believes this type of ongoing emergency management/terrorism preparedness conference is an important societal initiative that has taken on even greater importance in the post-9/11 world. In the aftermath of the unprecedented and devastating events of September 11, 2001, the functions of the Nation’s first responders in their efforts to protect the homeland could not be any more pressing, and any way that he can contribute to the cause is personally satisfying.

Second, Mr. Young is excited to be a part of the partnership that has been established between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the event’s organizers, and the higher educational community to produce the best outcome for the issues that impact public safety and emergency management. What better way to excise the best practices for public safety and emergency management future operations than to bring scholarly educators, highly motivated graduate students, and public safety practitioners who are currently working and leading on the frontlines, together in order to share and impart information that will ultimately benefit the safety of society as a whole.

As part of this event, Mr. Young hopes to improve his resumé by assisting with the writing of correspondence and other forms of literature for DHS. In a time when employment opportunities are difficult to come by, the ability to say that you have been invited by DHS to assist in the formulation of various written documents, is not only impressive to potential future employers, but may open doors within DHS itself, which happens to be the largest government agency in the United States.

Mr. Young hopes that heis recognized for his writing potential and that heis invited for future opportunities to write for this and/or similar organizations. He enjoys writing, and he believes that he will one day make major contributions to professional and trade journals dealing with public safety, as well as formulating and preparing operations manuals for first responder government agencies. Once again, Mr. Youngis happy for this opportunity and can’t wait to work with all of the conference attendees.
