COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed for all ages and levels of fitness. It emphasizes body mechanics and identifies concepts so the student may have a lifetime of walking enjoyment. It involves weekly goal setting incentives and focuses on a variety of walking experiences for fun and cardiovascular improvement.

PREREQUISITES: Since this course will utilize the college’s e-education platform (Blackboard), computer experience, internet navigation experience, and Blackboard experience is recommended. The college does offer Blackboard workshops during the first week of the semester.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

By the end of this course student will be able to walk continuously for forty minutes at a minimum heart rate range of 65% max and make appropriate individual safety modifications.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENTS:

Learning Outcome 1:Students will demonstrate appropriate safety practices

Activity: Students will complete a pre/post safety assessment to measure progression of safety knowledge

Outcome Assessment:Post safety assessment.

Learning Outcome 2:Students will improve and/or maintain their level of cardiovascular fitness throughout the semester.

Activity:Students will measure their exercising heart rates and perform a timed one-mile pre-post walking assessment test.

Outcome Assessment:Pre-and post-assessment.

Upon the completion of this course, students will fulfill objectives 2, 3, and 4 of the following Physical Education Program objectives:

1)To provide a high-quality university parallel education for students seeking careers in elementary and secondary physical education.

2)To provide a high quality education to serve the needs of degree and non-degree seeking students interested in personal fitness enhancement, health education, first aid, and skill development associated with intercollegiate athletics.

3)To provide a life long fitness and wellness education helping to fulfill the graduation components for students who are pursuing an Associates of Arts Degree.

4)To provide effective fitness enhancement, health education, and involvement for community members.

5)To provide fitness enhancement and wellness education for seniors.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

  1. Must participate in a minimum of 5 hours of walking each week for 6 weeks. Three of those hours must be completed during the designated class meeting times and the remaining two hours may be completed at whatever time fits the student’s schedule. Saturday class sessions are two hours.
  2. Complete posture evaluation and walking technique.
  3. Complete and turn in the health history form. If anything on the health history changes during the course of the semester, i.e.... pregnancy, medications, injuries etc., please notify the instructor immediately.
  4. Weekly journal assignments must be submitted by Sunday midnight. Unless prior arrangements are made, late entries will not be graded.
  1. Full completion of the pre and post tests are required to be successful in this course.
  2. Behavior: Classroom/online behavior is to be appropriate to a positive learning environment. You are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner in this course. You should treat all class members with respect and be thoughtful in your own contributions to the class. You will receive one warning concerning inappropriate behavior; if the behavior persists, you will be dropped from the course and the matter will be referred to student services for college discipline. If there is a problem for you in the class, please let me know. See College Catalog, pages 15-16, for other college behavioral policies.
  3. You are on your honor to complete these activities so that you may gain the benefits. Students are expected to be honest in all aspects of their work. All work is evaluated on the assumption that the work presented is the student’s own. Students are subject to the grade of failure (F) for any of the following dishonesty practices. Cheating--the improper use of books, notes, other student’s test or quizzes, or other aids during an examination or quiz. Collaboration--submission of a paper in which substantial portions are paraphrased as one’s own from, or identical to another student’s paper. Plagiarism--submission of a paper in which substantial portions are paraphrased without documentation or are identical to published or unpublished material from another author.
  4. After the first week of class, if the student does not show or communicate with the instructor, I will withdraw the student for lack of attendance. The student must initiate the action to withdraw by the 12th week. After the 12th week, a grade other than W will be issued.

  2. Practice proper stretching techniques

Weeks 4:

  2. Pracitce variations and additions to a walking work out (push-ups, squats, pull-ups, intervals, sprints, etc.)

Weeks 6:

  1. Complete Personal Walking Plan journal assignment for week 6

It is the student’s responsibility to drop the course.

During the first two weeks of the term, a student may drop a course or completely withdraw without it being recorded on the student's official transcript. After the first two weeks a “W”will be recorded in any course the student drops.

A student desiring to drop a course during the first two weeks of the term may do so on-line. In order to drop or completely withdraw after the first two weeks, the student must complete and submit a drop or complete withdrawal form to the Admissions and Records Office.

NOTE: No course may be dropped or withdrawn from after 75% of the course or twelve weeks of the term has elapsed, whichever is earlier
