Martin Mueller welcomed the group and started the meeting by going through the agenda and outlined the goals of the meeting, starting with, prioritizing the work of the group. The main goals of the meeting were to define the members and the commitment of the group; letter of support from the members and/or their group they represent; the process for decision making; and the Legislative Report. It was suggested that a template for the support letter be drafted by OSPI and sent out to the group. There was consensus of the group regarding the commitment/consistency, representation, and expectations. The group agreed through a consensus on the decision making process.
Deb Came, OSPI gave a presentation of the Comprehensive Education Data and Research System (CEDARS). The CEDARS collects data from school districts statewide. The presentation was very informative and laid some of the ground work for one of the nine requirements of the group in Substitute House Bill 1163, Data Collection. At this time CEDARS does not collect data on bullying but, starting in 2012
Dixie Grunenfelder, OSPI also gave a presentation on the Healthy Youth Survey (HYS). The HYS has been developed and vetted by several agencies and is based on national and local surveys. The data and use of the survey is very beneficial and important information for those school districts that participate. The survey has enabled districts to see the Actuality v. Reality and they see the value in it.
Greg Williamson, OSPI started his exercise by asking the group to close their eyes and picture the future of this group and what is it that schools are doing now around bullying, what are the victory stories, the headlines, what are kids texting each other about; what are our recommendations; what are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Through the exercise many good comments, ideas, and suggestions as a result. (See attached)
Martin concluded the meeting with suggesting that there be a Webinar – Go to Meeting in the next couple of weeks with a draft of the Legislative Report sent out to everyone and those who wish to participate may do so. There will information regarding the Webinar and how to participate in the notice that will be sent out.
The next meeting will be held at the Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC) located at 19010 1st Avenue S., Burien, WA 98148, on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
