On Wedneday, the Delta Men’s Water Polo Team dropped a conference game to Santa Rosa 5-15. Santa Rosa 8-1 (3-0) remains in first place in the Big 8 Conference, while Delta slips to 5th place. Freshman Paul Hernandez scored 2 second half goals, drew 1 exclusion, and had 1 assist to lead the Mustangs. Sophomore Evan Folz added 2 goals, 3 drawn exclusions, and Freshman Kevin Schuh scored the other Delta goal, and added a drawn exclusion and a steal. The Mustangs have two exhibition games this Sunday; the 10am game at UOP versus their B team, and the 6pm Alumni game at the June Fergusson Pool.

Ohlone Tournament @ Freemont, Ca

On Friday, Delta went 2-0 with wins over Ohlone College 13-11, and Sierra College 9-7. This put Delta in the driver’s seat going into Saturday games looking for a tournament championship. Evan Folz led the team with 11 goals on the day, while Calvin Watt added 5 goals, Kevin Schuh had 3 goals, Paul Hernandez chipped in 2 goals, and Taylor Salisbury rounded out the goal scoring with 1. Goalie Phil Giles had 8 saves versus Sierra and 14 saves against Oholne.

On Saturday, Delta beat Solano 10-0 & San Jose St. 10-4. This gave the Mustangs' a 4-0 record and the Ohlone tournament Tiltle. Evan Folz scored 5 goals on Saturday amd Paul Hernandez scored 4, while Chris Fernandez and Phil Giles combined for 14 saves on the day. The Mustangs are back in action for a home Big 8 conference match on Wednesday, September 30th versus Santa Rosa @ 3:30pm.

Vs. Modesto College @ Modesto, Ca

Delta lost the second Big 8 conference match to Modesto College on Wednesday 9-12. The Mustangs came out strong and built a 3 goal lead late in the first half, but lack of experience and endurance caught up to the team in the second half. Evan Folz scored five goals to lead the Mustangs. Phil Giles had 13 saves and 6 steals, while Calvin Watt (3 goals) and Kevin Schuh also contributed to the offensive attack. Both Schuh and Watt also played an excellent game at 2M defense. The Mustangs are 5-5 overall and 0-2 in Big 8 play. Delta returns to the pool and is back in action on Friday at the Ohlone Tournament.

WKA Tournament @ Stockton, Ca

Going 3-1 over the weekend, Delta captured 2nd place in the Bill Anttila Water Polo tournament. Delta opened the tournament with impressive wins over Solano College 20-1 & Ohlone College 18-11. Day Two was a statement day for the Mustangs as they beat the 3rd ranked team in NorCal, Cabrillo College 14-13, and illustrated that Delta would be a contender in the north. The championship game’s statement was a Delta still has a lot of work to do to stay consistent at the top as they fell to Santa Rosa 5-11.

Delta missed a chance to gain an away conference win by falling to ARC 13-12. Delta built a substantial lead late in the first half, but saw it slip away with too many unforced errors. Steve Jomaoas & Evan Folz led the Mustangs with 4 goals each and Phil Giles had 10 goalie saves. Jomaoas also led Delta with 3 assists and 2 steals.

West Valley Invitational @ Saratoga, Ca

The Mustangs started off the 2009 campaign with a 2-2 record at the West Valley Invitational in Saratoga this past weekend. Calvin Watt (Fr.-Tokay HS, Lodi, Ca) led all scoring and Phil Giles played stellar in the cage. Delta opened the season with a 12-13 loss to ARC, followed by a 0-13 loss to Modesto JC. On day two of the tournament, the Mustangs improved on their defense and destroyed San Jose St. 17-9 and Ohlone College 11-5. The Mustangs are back in action on with their first Big 8 Conference game at American River College in Sacramento, Ca 3:30 Wednesday, September 14th.
