Introduction
Congratulations, You have won the lottery and will have the opportunity to open the Salon/Day Spa you have always dreamed of.
The Task
In this Webquest you have to come up with a great name, design your layout and select your equipment. In addition, you need to consider the services you will be offering and what supplies will be needed to perform those services. Finally, you must be familiar with and follow all State Board of Cosmetology guidelines.
The Process
1.  Read and Review the State Board of Cosmetology Salon Application for owning and opening your own salon.
2. Determine the equipment you will need to operate your Salon/Day Spa
a. Using an Excel spreadsheet make a detailed list of all equipment with pictures and prices of each individual piece. Than total how many of each item you need.
Example:
Amount / Item / Cost / Total
4 / Hydraulic Chair / $650.00 / $2,600.00
b. Provide total of all equipment at the bottom of the list
c. LAYOUT:
Indicate the location of the equipment using the following web site:
www.beautydesign.com
3.  Check the PA State Board of Cosmetology Rules & Regulations – Physical Requirements of a beauty salon for cosmetology, esthetician salon, nail technology, or natural hair braiding salon Section 7.71-7.79. Does your salon meet all the requirements? (Square footage, square footage per operator, bathrooms, handicap accessibility, exits, etc.)
Salon Equipment List
Below is a list of some of the distributor you may use to find your equipment. You may choose to find other distributors using a search engine. Make sure you get a picture, and record a price per item for each piece of equipment along with a citation for the web page.

4.  Think about what services you will be offering. Create the list of services along with prices. Using a search engine, type in “salon price lists” to help you get ideas for services and prices for the services you plan to offer. Then make a list of the supplies you will need to perform the services. Using a search engine, type in “beauty supplies” to find prices for each supply. Include the amount you need to order to open your salon and the price for each along with a total.
Amount / Item / Cost / Total
24 / Permanent Wave - Normal / $3.00 / $72.00
24 / Permanent Wave - Tinted / $3.50 / $84.00
Total / $156.00
3-D Salon
5.  Develop a 3-D salon based on the mock salon you have designed on your layout. You may use any kind of container you wish. Please, no smaller than a shoe box, or so big that two people have to carry it. Keep it to a size that you can easily bring in and take home. BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER. Be creative in making furniture, decorating walls and designing your salon inside and out. You will be graded on content not size.
Portfolio
6.  Last but not least, you will put together a business portfolio that will include:
a.  Diagram of layout make sure all State Board of Cosmetology Rules and Regulations – Physical requirements are included
b.  Equipment list including pictures, prices and total
c.  Supply list including prices and total (no pictures needed)
d.  State Board Laws (get from teacher)
e.  Citations, references, webpages that you used
f.  Evaluation Sheet
Conclusion
We hope this project has opened your eyes to the cost associated with the opening of a salon. It should have made you realize how much work is needed to be done before you even open the doors. Organization is the key; it will make the task much easier. It should have also shown you how expensive things can be. For this project you were given an unlimited amount of money to spend, which is usually not the case. Most of us have to stay on some kind of a budget. One of the biggest obstacles you will encounter is borrowing the money needed to open your own business, whatever that business may be. Do not let that stop you. It can be done! If your dream is to own your own business someday; then go for it. This project should have given you some idea of how to start. If you followed the steps you will be on your way.
Good luck and have fun with this.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated on your completeness of each section-the design, does it meet state board requirements, does it have all the equipment and supplies to successfully open and operate a business. Grammar and spelling will also be included as a part of the evaluation.
