‘Pyramid Model’ –A promotion, prevention and intervention framework for social emotional behavioural support.

During 2015, Educators in selected kindergarten services in Melbourne’s outer east participated in an extensive research project with Monash University to implement the Pyramid Model practices for promoting social emotional competence in young children. They received training workshops, individualised coaching and materials to support implementation. The Pyramid Model supports the Australian and Victorian Early Years frameworks. The families and educators in the research project identified many positive outcomes for the children, including getting along with others, following directions, identifying and regulating emotions, engaging in co-operative play, more positive feelings of self-worth and increased engagement in learning experiences.

This day brings together two highly experienced practitioner-researchers to present their theories and expertise on how PSFO’s can use their proficient observation skills and experience for coaching teachers to implement new practices. They will address the challenges of planning and supporting typically developing children alongside children with severe disabilities and high support needs.

1.30pm-4.00pmBlended Practices:Jennifer Grisham-Brownis a Professor in the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program and faculty director of the Early Childhood Laboratory School at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Grisham-Brown is co-author of two books on blended programs in early childhood education. Her research interests include authentic assessment, tiered instruction, and inclusion of children with significant disabilities.

Together with Mary Louise Hemmeter she has developed ‘Blended Practices’ a book that really discusses the nitty-gritty of true preschool inclusion practices. Blended Practice has four elements: assessment, scope and sequence, activities and instruction, and progress monitoring. How do educators construct educational approaches that enable them to simultaneously assist children whatever their developmental stage and/ or support needs may be?

This day is every PSFOs dream. It will be full of practical ideas (that have a research evidence base) to help you guide educators whether their queries are about overall programming or children with highly exceptional needs.
