ESW OtD Process Quality Assessment

Description / Background:

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is one of the world's leading manufacturers of construction equipment with a wide product range.

In all of today’s heavy duty machinery, embedded systems are used for controlling and monitoring a vast range of machine functionality.

The embedded software (ESW) is distributed globally to the Volvo CE production plants in four continents, which puts high demands on the distribution of this software.

Like all processes in the production industry, the process of distributing the correct software to the right plant at the right time (making it possible to deliver the machine to the customer on time) is very complex.

This degree project has been defined aimed to minimize disturbances in production, optimize methods at the assembly lines, and follow up production activities concerning quality, lead-times and delivery assurance.

Goal

Establishing measurements for improvement of quality and efficiency of embedded software handling in production.

Execution

Develop working methods for introduction of process quality control

Define suitable performance metrics for evaluating the process quality (e.g. data delivery precision, availability, reliability, etc).

Show connection between performance metrics and costs.

Describe how to use performance metrics for production improvements.
