Volunteer Role Description: Interpreter/Translator
Position Summary:
Cooking Matters is a cooking-based nutrition education course designed to teach low-income families how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Professional chefs and nutrition educators volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on courses that show adults, teens, and kids how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe, and tasty ways. This can mean the difference between feeding families for just one night and making sure they have the knowledge, skills, and resources to prepare healthy meals for a lifetime.
The interpreter/translator will ensure that our non-English-speaking participants receive a high quality learning experience.
Responsibilities:
- The individual will serve as an interpreter for volunteer chefs, nutrition educators, and course coordinators during class time and/ortranslate recipes, nutrition education tools, and administrative forms.
- If serving as a class interpreter, the individual must interpret all information spoken in its entirety, without adding, omitting, or modifying based on personal beliefs or preferences.
- If serving as a translator, the individual must translate written material in its entirety, without adding, omitting, or modifying based on personal beliefs or preferences. Translations must be completed and returned to the Nutrition Education Specialist contact in a timely manner.
Skills/Experience Required:
- Full fluency in English and one or more other languages. Degrees in a foreign language, extensive study abroad, or other relevant qualifications may be considered based on degree of experience, skill, and comfort level in interpretation and translation.
- Interest and comfort in working with low-income individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Comfort speaking in front of groups (average class size is 12 participants).
- Ability to travel to class location (generally located within county in which volunteer resides).
- Willingness to be trained on Cooking Matters curricula, to work as a team with volunteer chef and nutritionist, and to adhere to program policies and team decisions.
Time Commitment:
- At least 2-4 hours for training and orientation to Cooking Matters before teaching your first class.
- At least 3 hours per week for each Cooking Matters class: ½ hour for class set up, the 2-hour Cooking Matters class, and ½ hour for class cleanup. Participants spend approximately ½ hour each week preparing for class independently, outside of class hours.
