Healthy Living—Flu Prevention Tips

With the recent shortage of this year’s flu vaccine, many people who may normally be vaccinated will not be this year. Therefore, it is even more important to follow some simple steps to prevent the spread of the virus, and, if it invades your home, to prevent spreading it to others.

Influenza or “flu” is a respiratory infection caused by a virus contained in secretions from the nose and respiratory system of an infected person. Viruses get in the air when the person sneezes or coughs. They are killed by sunlight, but may remain on indoor surfaces or items that have been handled or sneezed on by people with viruses. When a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches his or her nose, mouth or eyes, he or she can contract the flu.

Hand washing is one of the easiest and best ways to avoid getting or passing on the flu virus. Use alcohol based hand sanitizers if washing facilities are not handy. Teach children how to wash hands properly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) offer these instructions for proper hand washing: Wet your hands with warm, running water and apply liquid or clean bar soap. Lather well. Rub hands vigorously together for at least 10 to 15 seconds. Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. Rinse well. Leave the water running when you are finished rinsing. Then dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel and use the towel to turn off the faucet.

Other tips for avoiding the flu include avoiding close contact with sick people, crowds, and poorly ventilated public places. Also, keep your environment clean and comfortable, and spend time outdoors when you can. Weather permitting, open windows and drapes occasionally in daytime. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and don’t smoke.

If you do catch the flu, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Use tissues to control secretions and dispose of them after each use. Keep frequently touched surfaces sanitized. Call rather than visit your doctor for advice. Stay away from others as much as possible, especially those at high risk. Stay home, and don’t go to work or visit hospitals or nursing homes. If you need to go to a health care facility, ask for a mask. Avoid touching your own mouth, nose and eyes. Don’t share utensils, water bottles, toothbrushes or other personal items. Dumpsters

In July, Anne Arundel County provided Selby with dumpsters and, as usual, we took full advantage of them, filling them with yard debris and household refuse. Most residents who brought items to discard followed the posted rules, keeping problems to a minimum. Community volunteers that monitored the dumpsters or otherwise assisted were Mitch Boyd, Richard Brown, Lois Carlson, Dennis Gheen, and Bruce and Susan Lanier. Thanks to all for their cooperation!

Nettle Nets

The jellyfish nets were hung this year although, fortunately, the jellyfish never showed up, making this a great year for swimmers. Thanks to the volunteers who helped put up and/or take down the nets this year: Jerry Brice, Todd Croteau, Marty Joyce, Alan Lanier, Bruce and Susan Lanier, Andrew Madison, Elliott Madison, Reds, and Pete Thomas.

Halloween Party

This year's Halloween party will be held on October 31st on the Clubhouse porch and beach from 7 to 9 p.m. Costume contest judging will be at 8 p.m. Hopefully, hay rides will also be offered as they have been in the past. Snacks and drinks, including hot apple cider, will be served. Contributions are welcome! Also, we are in need of clean wood for the bonfire. Editor’s Corner

Our community has grown to nearly 600 homes and is still increasing. More people than ever enjoy the benefits that Selby on the Bay has to offer. However,two problems arise when population increases. The first is that problems like vandalism and property destruction increase. Years ago, this community, as well as many others, was close-knit. Everyone knew each other and looked out for one another. Now many people, teenagers especially, have no regard for community property or the property and possessions of their neighbors, and think nothing of what doesn’t belong to THEM. Although there are areas of the community where neighbors are still “neighborly,” there is not an overriding sense of community as a whole. From this arises the second problem—lack of volunteerism. In this election year, we are all keenly aware of the effect that our input can have on the nationwide leadership that we can expect over the next four years. Unfortunately, most people are missing the effect that they can have right in their own backyard. As they lounge on the beach and watch children enjoy the playground or play without worry of nettle stings, or notice the recently cut grass in the park areas, or read this newsletter, few realize how many hours have been contributed by a very small number of volunteers. As you cast your ballot this November in order for your voice to be heard, why not call or send an email to one of the contacts listed below and ask how your voice can be heard in Selby? It’s up to you, personally, to be able to continue to enjoy all that our community has to offer.

Neighborhood News

Operation ID

Selby on the Bay is participating in Operation ID. This program involves using an engraver to etch your driver’s license number onto your valuables, or photographing them instead, in order to assist police with locating your belongings if they are ever stolen. You will receive two Operation ID stickers to place on doors or windows of your house to let others know you participate in this program. If any community resident is having a problem on his or her street, please call Dennis Gheen and report it to him as well as to the police. Mr. Gheen will discuss the problem with you and keep a record of it to be compiled in a report to be reviewed by the county police so that problem areas in the community can be addressed.
